I'll beat this dead horse. I keep every maintenance record for all of my vehicles. If I do it myself, I keep the parts receipt, write down the mileage and any notes, etc. I have provided this with all my sales, and it never ceases to impress buyers of my used vehicles - I will always do it. If someone shows me that level of detail, then I know that they cared for the vehicle. An inspection is important, but no service records = already starting out in the negative column when considering a vehicle in my book.

Private party certainly takes a lot more work to find 'the one', then have it inspected, negotiate, etc. Over the past decade, I have definitely gotten lazy and have mainly gone to dealers for their convenience factor.

I have a folder and I keep all records/receipts from everything I do to the truck in it. Never plan on selling, but if I do, it shows responsibility and care for the truck. If I were buying a vehicle and the owner pulled out all their records for me, I would feel that much more confident in the vehicle.

    Wow.

So you're saying you'd rather start out with a vehicle with absolutely no maintenance records produced, go through all the work of having it 'thoroughly inspected', than start with one that has 'worthless' meticulous maintenance records, which you can still have inspected? Maintenance records might not show every little thing done, but they certainly show the owner cared about taking care of the vehicle.

Same here. Folder with receipts for everything (even oil and filters) and an ongoing spreadsheet where I put date, mileage, and what I did, which I would print and put in the folder if I were to ever sell the truck.

In addition, the last owner had the dealer do everything, so I found every service from day 1 listed on the Toyota owner's page.

I say I'm going to hold onto it forever, but I could see potentially buying a Tundra or F-150 in 5 years or so and selling the Tacoma private party since I know it would go quick.

There is a thread on here where people post mileage 450,000 miles plus. And In Arizona there is a local pest control company with 40+ Tacoma's and they don't sell them till 300,000 miles and they still get $3000-$4000 depending on body and interior. Mileage isn't an issue. Only thing to worry about rust and accident history.
