DCSB OR 4x4 Auto here with 600 miles on it. I live in Colorado at 8000 feet elevation, and drop to 6000 feet for my commute to work. But I do half of my driving above 7000 feet.

Overall I'm averaging about 20.2 mpg.

Trip from Denver to Moab 370ish miles. 18mpg with my wife and I, back seat loaded with gear, and these. Average 70mph +/- 5 at times.

I definitely notice two modes on this truck.

"Fun" mode: it wants me to drive at 3-4k RPM to get the really great feeling torque, especially on back roads where having that higher RPM tension allows for greater control. This never gets better than 16 MPG, usually more in the 13-15 MPG

"Conservative" mode: it needs me to drive at 1-2k RPM, but at this RPM I find it very awkward to drive, especially on highway. You need to barely touch the gas, sometimes even full off or brake, as the truck feels like it's propelling itself. This is where I find the 17-22 MPG. Shifting is also less smooth in this RPM band.

Is this Atkinson vs. non-Atkinson? I don't know.

I'm trying to balance fun vs. wallet :)

This is with a 4x4 TRD OR manual transmission.

I would like to point out that this is one of, if not the best first posts I have seen in the few months I have been watching TW. You even remembered to mention the transmission and if it was a 4x4.

Really solid info and I want to thank you for your contribution.

    I agree, excellent post.

Seems like the gas mileage is similar to the old 4.0.

    Great under 65mph(2000rpm) - 20-21mpg

    Or crap over 65mph(2000+rpm - 16-18mpg.

I just got back a trip to WV. Got 17.5-19 on the highway through the mountains (5-7% grades) with cruise set at 68-75mph. I got 20.5 when I wasn't using cruise and was on back country roads that were up,down, side to side, very twisty mountain roads.

It seems like on the highway with cruise set, the transmission is very eager to drop to 4th gear. At times 5th gear would have been more than sufficient or just to lug 6th gear.

I've noticed this time of year my mpg on my f150 goes from 17.8 to upper 16's (mostly highway) and my wrangler drops from 18.5 to 17 (mostly in town) I wonder if the winter blend gets worse mileage than the summer blend? Trading the f150 in for a dclbor should be here in a month.

Winter gas drops mpg about 3%, colder weather is the larger reason.

I have a TRD off-road double cab 4x4 and can't seem to do any better than 16mpg ever...12mpg in town and 15 to 16 at 75mph is pretty consistent after 450 miles. I'm particularly disappointed since my 15 year old GMC full size got better mpgs

75 is not where the mpg is. In a v8, it might be

I'm getting about the same, maybe slightly better around town,14-15 MPG. My overall is around 17.5 MPG. That's my only major complaint with this truck, mileage sucks. I also came from a full-size Silverado duramax diesel, I was getting about 15 MPG consistently in that, and it was an '02. I guess it's not really fair comparing diesel and gas, but nevertheless, I was hoping for a little better mileage. It's still a nice little truck though.2015-11-01 07.33.58.jpg

I was getting 16 max in my trd off road 4x4 a/t till I let my wife drive it! She came back with 19 on averag! So I started driving very conservatively and it turned out I could get 22 if I want to but not very pleased to driving!

only 280 miles so far, but I'm averaging slightly above 18 mpg with very little highway driving. Pretty happy with that so far.
