Anyone replace their HU in a 2009 Taco?

I'm planning on replacing the HeadUnit in my 2009 regular cab. The new HU has a rear aux-input which I want to connect to the aux-input connector down by the 12VDC outlet. Do the wires for that run up to the HU wire harness? If so, how many wires & what colors? Or, is it a separate cable plugged into the back of the HU? The wiring schematic in the Haynes manual does not show anything about this, I guess because the aux jack was new for the 2009 HU's. Any info on this would be very helpfull! TIA

 

separate harness & connector, if you make it work with the new head unit lmk how you did it, I would like to do it with mine too if its possible.

 

My new HU has a rear aux-input which goes to 3 wires(R/L/grd), I hope to splice those to a wire harness(?) that plugs into the OEM aux-input harness connector behind the HU. Do you know what kind of connector that separate harness uses? I'm trying to figure this out without temporarily yanking my OEM/Delphy HU out just yet. I will not have my new Blaupunct HU for a week or so...I'm trying ahead to get all the parts I'll need.

 

the connector is the same as the one on the left in this picture above the usb pen drive.



the aux input connector goes to the same place a sat radio or oem cd changer would plug. Im pretty sure the connector had more than two wires, so its probably amplified.

 

That connector is used my some OEM integration companies to force an AUX in using the SAT/Changer connector. You could probably use that too.

The AUX in wires are in the steering wheel control harness. So you would need to connect those to the AUX in wires on your aftermarket headunit.

I did some investigation when I put in my eclipse unit to hard wire the steering wheel controls and those were part of the bundle. I'll look for the diagram I had that told me what is in the Toyota harness (what color was what).

 

I don't think he has steering wheel controls neither did I, My aux in wires came from the AUX IN by the 12V outlet to the headunit with that connector in the picture above and nothing else. I had three connectors behind my radio, one connector had only one brown wire, (since I dont have rear speakers), the other connector that had front speakers + power speakers, and the third connector that went to the AUX in, and connected using that connnector above.

 

I would be anxious to see then. I bet you have that same harness though. Just without anything going to the steering wheel control.

 

If you can't figure it out (NuovoTech) you could always do the mod I saw someone here post. He removed the AUX IN and the little circuit board it has behind, and used epoxy to glue a stereo wire from the head unit there, but I would prefer it like you want to do it, in case I ever go back to a stock radio.

My only concern is that the stock AUX in its already amplified and you would be feeding an amplified signal to your new radio that would probably amplify it again within its parameters, so Im guessing that when you switch to AUX in your new head unit you would probably have to turn down the volume or maybe the quality of the music will not be as good.

 

It does not seem to be, I tried connecting to a MP3 player & had to really crank up the volume. I've read comments here also stating this, so I'm not too worried about that.

epa4wd - Is that brown wire on your 1st connector maybe a radio mute? My new HU has 3 aux-input wires, black=grd, red=right ch, & white=left ch. Not sure where I could get a aux-input harness connector like that, so I'll splice my new HU wires into the OEM connector. I'll probably solder up the 3 wire ends & stick them into the respective connector slots, then just tape it up.

 

My new Blaupunkt SD48(below) is a great HU for the $ if you can handle no CD player! I put one into my olde BMW. It accepts a SD card(up to 2GB) into a front panel. It's black-faced with red illumination & matches the regular cab dash well. You can set the LCD to any color...such as Taco orange.

It also has a USB input in back, which I'll route down to the blank next to my aux-input slot below the heater/AC controls. Then I can use a USB stick or HDD to load MP3s. I have a 80GB external 1/8" HDD that powers directly off the USB port & that's a lotta tunes!

In all the threads here talking about removing the OEM HU, I have not seen any mention of a wire harness to the hazard switch/clock/SRS module. I assume there's one...correct? How does it disconnect?

 

yes there is a harness you simply unplug it when you pull out the radio.

 

You think you could snap a picture of the AUX harness when you install your new radio, now you have me curious and I would like to make it work with my aftermarket radio.

 

Sure...it may be a week or so till I get all the parts. First foto below is the upper connector, second is the lower one. Finding a mate for the upper one seems unlikely to me, that's why I'll just solder the wire ends first & them insert them into the harness slots securely. Electrical tape will finish the job & can always be undone later.

It has 5 wires so I wonder how it actually works, it should be 4 or 3 wires (left channel, right channel, ground, shield)

 

Yes, I believe so! After visiting that thread, I'm reposting fotos above of the OEM upper & lower aux-input connectors. Since we both have base models I'm curious if the steering wheel control wires are there.

Now you have me curious about that to!!! My memory sucks I should have taken pics when I removed my factory radio.

That makes sense its either amplified (very crappy tough) or its a noise filter (although I only see two resistors on the board no coil or anything else )

 

Yes, it could be either. My new HU has a blue(switched +12VDC) wire coming from it's rear aux-input/CD changer connector. I'll send that down to my lower aux-input & see what works best.

BTW blue wires coming from HeadUnits are usually switched +12VDC rails to turn on amps, CD changers, antennas, etc...

 

Thanks for the info let me know how it goes, wish we could find out the part number for the male plug so we could use that instead of splicing the wires, from a long search the female plug is a 20 pin plug with toyota part number 90980–12259, plug should obviously be from Delphi but on their website they don't show a diagram of the plugs so searching for it is difficult since they have so many 20 pin connectors. I wonder if the plug behind the radio has some kind of identification that could I use to find out the part number. Maybe I'll open the factory and take a look.
