my wife has a boy due in Jan. I am planning on putting the infant seat in the center of the back seat with the seat belts. I am s bit bummed that the latch system is only on the sides. What do y'all do?

The seat straps will reach the LATCH bars when the car seat is in the middle.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
I just had 3 car seats across back of my 15 double cab yesterday. Rear facing at each side, forward facing in middle. Used latch anchors on side seats and seatbelt on middle seat. All felt solid. Rear facing were hitting headrests of front seats but just barely. I have the Radian RXT seats FYI. Nice thin profile.

Just a heads up man. Unless the taco manual and the car seat manual specifically states that you can use the lower anchors of the sides seats to secure a car seat in the center seat, then I wouldn't even consider it. People will say it passed their "pull test" , but this isn't sufficient.

I remember reading the lower latches can be no more then 11 inches apart and if they are wider the seat may move from side to side, which is is probably the case with the Tacoma.

I would just stick with the seat belt, there is a reason there isnt a latch system in the center of our tacos.

This, it's not recommended to install a child seat in the center using the outboard latch connectors. I ran a brtitax bsafe in the center of mine using the seatbelt to install it. Worked great, moved up to britax boulevard convertible now and it's installed passenger side using the latch. Gives plenty of room while installed rear facing.

    Haha, good Dad.

I feel like the middle is the "safer" spot in the vehicle. I've always been paranoid of the outside seats. Proper latching is critical though.

My wife and I have our first child. He is 2 months and the seat faces rear. We have him behind the passanger seat and my wife slides her seat up some. It's a little snug. She is only 5'2 thought. I love they taco though , we take it everywhere!

Most (if not all) car seat manufacturers recommend against using both latch AND vehicle seatbelts. Similar to how cars have crumple zones to increase safety, the straps are supposed to stretch during an accident. This lets your kid slow down slower.

This isn't a concern for the OP, but the latches are also not rated to hold back the largest car seats + big kids. When I moved each kid to be forward facing, I always started using the seatbelt. More info here http://thecarseatlady.com/latch-weight-limits/

In Louisiana, the State Troopers offer car seat inspections. You can check if your state has something similar.

CA does as well. I'd be surprised if any state doesn't. Call your local fire department / police department. They can point you in the right direction.

I feel like the middle is safer too that's for sure. When my first kid was born the car seat was in the middle but that was for my wifes pilot.

Currently I have two car seats setup in the Taco, can't wait till they go to booster seats, save some space!
