So I went down to look at that 1980XR500 today.. on the way back a truck changes lanes in front of me and immediately throws a big rock into my windshield. So that's pretty great, got a 4inch horizontal crack in it now. Any idea on how I proceed? I've got the plate number and identifying features of the vehicle down. Thoughts?

Did it come off the truck or did the truck throw it from the road?

I'm pretty sure it got kicked from the road by the tire. He had no mud flaps, but I doubt that makes a difference in Ohio.

Nope..your screwed..only time it's the other drivers fault in Ohio is if you can prove he neglected to secure his load i.e. A dump truck with gravel or an extremely muddy truck. You'll either have to live with it or pay your comprehensive deductible/ price of new windshield to get your windshield replaced

Glass places may be able to repair it. I was told under the lenght of a dollar bill, and not to the edge of the glass. My insurance would cover this with no deductible.

Yeah I figured as much. I just gave the company a call and left a voicemail for them. At the very least I'd like to get them to put some mudflaps on their trucks so this doesn't happen to more people. Either that, or they could stop pulling out right in front of people and gunning it on the freeway:rolleyes:

The rock hit the very edge, so the edge is where the crack originates from:(

Mine started out about 3". It will just keep getting bigger. Most glass is safety glass so it is 2 layers. Its likely only the outside layer, and with the film in between the 2 pieces of glass should not be to much of an issue. I'm not shelling out $400 for new glass right now. Too many other mods to buy first lol!

    this.

even if you have the truck ID'd, there's no way to tell the rock came from that truck.

Check Groupon and LivingSocial. They've usually got deals on window replacement, detailing, etc.

I want to get a new windshield as well, but because mine is a crazy freaking star-field of pits. Hard to drive in the sun lol. I just dont want to remove my snorkel and all the other BS with clips and trim the FJ makes them remove to do the deed.

FWIW you can go from 1000 comprehensive deductible to close to nothing for probably less than 10 bucks a month. Do it. Last car had a hit and run. That was a grand from my pocket. Could have been like $150 for a mere $7 / month. I was not happy to know that. I am pretty certain glass coverage does nothing to your rates either.

I think the law states that if you have comprehensive your insurance provider can not charge you your deductible for glass repair, I think it's gratis. Also, there are some glass places that pay people's deductibles or do the work free.. the law varies state to state so I'm not positive what my situation is. I'd be willing to groupon with some of you if you are interested. Bummer it happened in November, windshields shouldn't be replaced in winter haha.
