Couple of browns and a rainbow from yesterday, the fishing was fantastic! Lots of 20" fish, no wind, and nobody out fishing.

Yep it was a great fall for fishing. I wish the water levels were higher, but oh well. I just tarped the boat for the winter so I'll have to wait a few months before I give it another go.

Forecast is getting a little chilly up there too haha

Idk how much I'd want to fish in single digits

Yeah, that too. My dad's friend said the fishing on the middle is still hot right now. But you need a jet boat to effectively run it because the water is so low. AND it's like 15 degrees. So...the perfect storm for me to call it quits for the year haha.

Fishing in the cold is worth it! I have a friend that heads out late november before rivers freeze. The fish change their habbits but from what I understand a handful of midges will land you some MASSIVE trout. If school slows down I might try to get out. If not...ICE FISHING

Oh I agree with you. I love late season fishing when nobody is on the water. The pictures I posted above are from a day that I only saw one other boat all day. And for the Kenai river, that's rare.

The hardest part is finding someone to go with that is willing to tough out the cold.

Usually I catch the biggest fish of the year during the coldest months, fishing mostly tailwaters that aren't frozen up. Nymphing is pretty much the only way to catch them, using #16-20 flys under deep running rigs, not much insect life is hatching when its single digit temps. Plus not many 20"+ trout feed on the surface consistently, their food is found by sitting deep on seams in the river sucking nymphs all day, especially during the cold months.
Icy guides and frozen hands are a reality for me from Nov-April. If your willing to put up with those two factors, the fishing is the best of the year. Seems the colder, windier, and shittier it is the better the fishing. Especially for brown trout.

Finally managed to get on top of a school of blitzing stripers, get a cast off, and actually keep the fly in the fish long enough to get it to the boat!

Been many striperless trips, missed fish, and lots of gas burned, since the last striper was landed... But this 16lb'er made it worthwhile!

    I do my weekly/biweekly update -

Last weekend was the opener for bear rifle season here in PA. We hiked all day Saturday and Monday along a few gorgeous streams that I CANNOT wait to get a chance to fish -

And since its still super nice and almost December, we fished Sunday for a bit. I got into a few wild browns.

It's actually a Midshipman fish. I was in SoCal this past spring and happened to have a 6wt with me. With a couple of hours to fish, limited knowledge, and limited access, that was all I could scratch up. :D
