First, I did do a site search and there was no definitive information, just some WAGs. I've also looked through the operator's manual and didn't see this issue addressed there either.

    My questions:

    1) How much weight can the tailgate support while down?
    2) What about the rear step bumper?

I'm a pretty big guy and I was using the tailgate to get in/out of the bed area this weekend while I was washing the truck. It seemed pretty solid, but I don't want to push it beyond its limits unnecessarily.

Anyone have any information on weigh-bearing limitations of these two areas?

I did this to my tailgate. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tailgate-mod.398052/ just an idea for you if you are concerned and want to do an easy add on.

I have been putting a huge amount of weight on it, myself around 180 plus the machine which is easily 300+ loading in and out. not sure about the step bumper or how the stock tailgate would have held up.

    Thanks for the response.

I don't foresee myself loading up anything requiring a ramp, but you never know. Mainly, I'm concerned with getting my big ass (260-ish) in/out of the bed area whether to reach areas of the roof to wash/wax or loading lawn/garden to the cab-end of the bed. I'm kinda surprised that Toyota didn't include weight limitations on these areas in the manual because there is pretty good information for towing capacity, etc.

As far as the tailgate mod, is that only to protect the plastic liner on the inside of the tailgate? I'm guessing that won't be of much use if it's just me jumping in/out of the bed using the tailgate as a "step" or even a seat.

For some reason I thought my dealer said 615lbs on the tailgate, could be wrong though. I'm confident that it could do at least 500

I may have to ask the service guys if there is some documentation on it when I take it in for service (hopefully that isn't too soon!).

Yes. Even examples like @mosesofthesouth used loading 300 pounds multiple times a day is helpful. Part of loading the bed involves getting whatever that payload is across that tailgate somehow, and I'm kind of surprised Toyota didn't provide any details whatsoever.
