I am pretty sure you can use a 97-2000 as well it was the 2003 and 2004 transmissions that had to be a 2003 or 2004 exclusive. The 4runner I believe has the speedo sensor in a different place so you have to plug the hole or relocate it, not sure it has been a while since I last researched that.

Are you prerunner or 4x? You'll be looking for either a A340F (4x) or A340E (2x) Any of the years up to 2004 SHOULD work, but like anything else do the research as you are now, sorry couldn't give you a better answer..

Sorry it's a 4x4 I called a junk yard that primarily deals with Toyotas and they said only an 01 or 02 will work but couldn't tell me why other than it wouldn't shift right

I'm pretty sure only the 03 04 are different. They require t4 vs dexron 3 atf and is drive by wire instead of cable so they are different.

It probably bolts up fine but may be because of electronics..

The 01 02 4runner had drive by wire so that must be what they are thinking.
