I save the expired stuff... if it is day 246 and you have an infected wound, they may come in handy. I strongly believe most of the expiration dates are BS anyway. Plus, it's hard to source those two items now, imagine how hard it will be if something as mundane as a natural disaster breaks the supply chain.

Shrug. I don't worry about expiration dates on stuff that's kept in the house because it's at a fairly constant temperature. The temps in the vehicles fluctuate wildly enough that I like to keep things UTD. Bandages will move into the house for the next time I cut myself, but painkillers, burn cream, antibiotic ointment, etc get rotated out as they expire. I figure that after a few years of anywhere from 120 degrees to -30 degrees I don't mind spending $20 to restock.

Good point on the temp swings. I keep mine in a backpack on me (or within arms reach) at all times, but I work outdoors in some nasty conditions. I get my stuff from adv medical. Where do you get supplies? http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/refills-more.html

The original kits were a pair of Masterman's OSHA 10-person kits that I picked up when I was in high school. I got them primarily for the rubber-gasketed waterproof plastic containers that they came in and I customized them from there. Now they're essentially an OSHA 10-person kit with the addition of a bag of Quick Clot, save-a-tooth, more bandages/bandaids, a swiss army knife, and other random additions. Now I just keep them restocked from the local drug store and Amazon. :notsure:

I have a really cool Dr that I Have been going to since I was 10 that hooks me up Staple, suture kits and misc items....I do check it every year

And as with a lot of ammo I vacuum pack into 50 rd bags and you can get roughly about 1700 rds 9mm, 1600rd 45ACP, 2000 rds of 556 in 30 rd bags and 1800 rds of 308 in 50 cal ammo cans...

    Per can? o_O
    Color me skeptical.
If you can only fit 1700 rounds of 9mm, I'd be amazed if you could get 2000 rounds of .223 or 1800 rds of 308 into one...

For example, I can fit a bit more than a 440 round spam can's worth of 7.62x54r for my Mosin into a .50 can, call it around 500 rounds, and they're about the same dimensions as .308. I've got a little room to spare and I'm not vacuum packing them, but there's certainly not space enough for another 1300 rounds....

I researched this back a few years ago when I had a hiking backpack med kit expire on me. Most package-sealed consumer drugs in tablet form (read: ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, some antibiotics) don't "expire" in the sense that they go bad. After the expiration date their guaranteed potency begins to diminish so they lose effectiveness for the given dose. So a 500mg Tylenol tablet may only be as effective as a 250mg tablet if it's been expired for 2 years. As long as there's no noticeable sign of contamination or decomposition of the tablet, they should be completely safe to use in a pinch. If the pill is a capsule or gel-cap, the same cannot be said so those should be replaced upon expiration.

Of course the best thing to do is replace them when they expire, but if you're in a scenario where you need medicine and it's expired, generally you can still take it with no ill effect provided it meets the criteria above.

Depends on the .50 can. I have a "fat 50" can I'm using as a battery box in my tacoma. An Optima yellow top fits in them with room to spare.

I can fit an M4 and 2000 rounds of 5.56 in one of these no problem. Same lid as the standard 50 can. 5A951370-567C-4108-82BB-260AF95025D1_zps_639d2729c63612b57d7185acfada1671d37b8444.jpg

Yeah, but a .308 is a lot bigger than a 9mm, and he said he can fit 1700 of those into a .50, but 1800 rounds of .308. Just didn't make sense to me...

Plus, even if you're fitting that kind of ammo count into a can, moving them must be a bitch and a half, haha!

Hey folks. New to the forum and first timer on this thread. There are some excellent ideas flying around here. One thought; every once in awhile someone posts the occasional anti-prepper comment. My position, the end of society isn't the only thing for which you need to be prepared (and quite frankly, the chance of IT happening is pretty freakin' slim!). However, the disaster that leaves you stranded can be as simple as a severe snowstorm stranding thousands on the highway - and blocking your pathway out (happened in KY in 1994). It can be a hurricane that kills power for weeks and leads to zombie-like looters with one thing on their minds - taking your stuff (and hopefully not brains!) (Katrina). It can simply be an accident in the middle of winter dozens of miles from anything (happened to my friend). Whatever the situation, if you're prepared, you'll be better off. Anyway, that's my two cents. I'll sit down and continue taking notes. Out.

Welcome to the thread, Jim! Most of us agree with your position, and the occasional anti-prepper troll who wanders in from under their bridge typically doesn't stay long.
Hopefully you find some ideas that you can use, and feel free to toss any of yours into the pot.

Also, I see that you have a '16 TRDOR. Therefore, I am jealous and I hate you.

They do get Heavy. I will be packing some more soon as I do this when I go shooting so I don't have to take 3 or 4 cases of ammo I can usually take just 2 cans with me. I can stuff between 80 and 90 20 rounds packs of 308 in the the can the bags turn out to be about 1/2 inch thick like this picture here....

Sadly I cannot keep much ammo in the truck nor magazines as I live nearby the fascist state of MD and frequently pass through. My Glock mags are "high capacity", therefore illegal and must be removed from my truck any time I visit or pass through the state.

Remember the Guyot stainless steel water bottles that they quit making because they sold the line to Nalgene? Seems like they are making a comeback.

Just ordered four of these. I have two of the older Guyot bottles that were made with a smaller diameter base that I keep full time in the front door cup/bottle holder pockets. I just dump the water in them every month and refill them and toss them back in the door pockets.

Friend of mine gave me some stainless fish mouth spreaders that fit inside the rim perfectly which will allow you to boil water in them quite easily. Embarrassed to say I have no idea where the spreaders are right now.

What size .50 cans are you using? Not sure on the dimensions of the SAW cans, but my .50 cans are the standard cans and like I said they're only good for about 500rds of 7.62X54R
