What brand and grade fuel are you running?

My fuel economy is terrible. Based on a 21.1 gal tank I just averaged about 14 mpg from what my computer says.

Here is the kicker. I have 33" tires also. So when I calculate for the tire size I'm figuring about 16mpg.

My 2006 used to get 21mpg but that was a manual trans.

I'm going to have to try different brands of fuel grade. Plus get my tonneau cover on.

33" tires and your fuel economy dropped. That is a shocker.

Sounds about right. I run 93 on 33's and mine are light (41 lbs each) and get about 17-18mpg consistently (I know its a 2nd gen, but should be similar). Anytime you lift you should be ready to take a beating on mpg, gotta pay to play.

I'm curious of this as well since the manual says "at least 87 octane" Most of the time it is more specific to the octane. Higher octane typically has better additives so if this truck gets better mileage(even 1 mpg) it would be worth it to run, imo

I run 87 Sunoco, was getting barely 16mpg mixed driving. Tried a tank of 89 octane got the same mpg as before but the next tank I switched back to 87 and started getting 18mpg right out of the gate. I've got 1200 miles on the truck - did the 89 octane at 1000 miles. Now getting consistent 18mpg - manual tranny, just have to stay off the gas and shift up as much as I can driving around town is where I get killed, highway getting over 20mpg so its not too bad. Right now getting 390 miles per tank.

This is true. But lots of people have no clue.

Low octane makes more power because it has higher btu rating. Higher octane has lower btu's and runs cooler. That's why it helps prevent pinging.

If I can get up to 17-18 I will be happy. I'm pulling out all the tricks to see. Up my tire psi, k&n filter and low ethanol fuel.

I find it odd these trucks are not getting better fuel economy. Honestly other then the looks I'm not impressed with my 2016. My 2006 was made better.

Gasoline is mandated by the government to be the exact same chemical composition no matter who makes it. As a matter of fact one refinery could serve multiple brands. The brand difference is in the additives mixed in during the filling of a fuel truck. I have a friend that is an engineer for the Eagle Refinery here in Utah and has explained this to me. The additives are basically for cleaning, resisting fuel breakdown, and water displacement. Each brand has their own "marketing" to make us think one is better than another - and maybe they are right. From my understanding a place like Costco is some of the freshest fuel available because the sell so much of the stuff and they get a shipment from the refinery almost every day. Now I don't know what additives Costco puts in although they say they do.

To answer your question, I fill up with Costco when I'm near one and when near home it will be Chevron. The Chevron installed new clean tanks last year and I see the tanker there quite often so I know the gas is fresh. When going cross country I fill up and the busiest stations figuring that they have the freshest fuel. I never fill up when a tanker is there thinking that they are stirring up the sediment in the storage tank which could get into my tank.

My small engines seem to like Chevron the best although that may all just be in my head.

I fill up at Costco with regular. I usually get 19-22 city, and 25-ish on the freeway.

I dont know about sediment, but i know the gas is foamier, i have filled up my company truck tank just after the tanks have been filled and it will constantly kick the pump off from foaming to the top. I can come back the next day and it wont do that, so im assuming that something is happening when the tanker fills the tanks up, because that is the only time that it happens. On that note, i get about 16.5 in my 2014 DCSB with 265/75/16 bfg A/T's

I don't think it's a myth. Logic says that if there is sediment in the storage tank it will be dispersed when a tanker is refilling it. The pumps will pick that up. Now I agree that the stations are required to have fuel filters but I can't verify that. Same reason I change my own oil because I can't verify synthetic is used when specified. Also the 2nd generation 4.0 engines don't have a replaceable fuel filter . They just have a non-replaceable screen. I little internet searching shows both sides of the discussion. Myth or not, I don't do it if I have a choice.

As stated before, running high octane when your vehicle isnt rated for it is just a waste and can actually harm performance and MPG. Last tank on my 2016 DCLB TRD Sport 4x4 Auto I was getting 21 ish mpg doing about 50% city. Lots of runs to home depot to pick up stuff for my house, rush hour traffic, etc.

I usually use Walmart 86 gas in my Tacoma. Got 35k on it and have never checked the milage. I know when I drag the boat it gets less. It's a truck a "tool"'that I need for a reason.

My Bimmer is a whole different story. I run nothing but Shell Vpower 93 and have every tank logged for the last 9 years and +100k miles of ownership.
