Transfer Case and Diff Oil Change

Noobie question. I'm planning on doing all the fluids on my '04, it's got 100,000 miles and I don't know if the fluids were done at 90k. I went to the dealership to get all the gaskets and crush washers. They told me the front differential and transfer case shared the same drain/fill plug. Is this correct?

 

Believe they are. 10mm allen bolts.

Front differential / transfer case: redline

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 GL-5+

Transmission: redline mt-90

Rear differential: redline 75w-90 GL-5+

Does that look correct?

 

yup sounds correct, I did the same thing.

The front diff will be an allen head, the transfer case should be a big ass 24mm thin headed hex bolt.

 

So you're saying the transfer case and front diff are not sharing the same drain and fill plugs On the gen 1 tacos?

Basically the dealership gave me 6 washers to do the front and rear diffs, transfer case, and manual transmission. I thought I would need 8, but they said the T case and front diff were shared...

 

On my '02, only the front diff fill plug is a 10 mm allen key type.

The drain plug on the front diff and the drain and fill on the t-caes are not the allen key type. As @bry838 said, they take a 24 mm socket or wrench the same as the rear diff fill and drain.

 

Thanks. I think you misunderstood my question. The dealer said that the front differential and transfer case shared the same oil, as in there is one drain plug and one fill plug to change the oil on both. He only gave me 6 washers to do front, rear, transmission and T case. I'm pretty sure now he had no idea what he was talking about and I need 8 washers not 6, because the T case has its own drain and fill plug.

Now I just need to figure out which washers I'm missing...

 

The ones youre missing will be the same ones you got for the manual tranny, theyre the same style fill and drain bolt.

That dude is an idiot if he thought the diff and transfer shared oil and drain and fill plugs!!! Theyre nowhere near eachother!

Haha, yea. After looking under the truck this morning, I know where everything is now. He gave me Copper + steel crush for the front, 2 steel crush washers for the tranny, and 2 aluminum for the rear. After a little research, I'm guessing he was wrong on that too...

I believe I need:

1 copper for the front drain

2 Aluminum for the tranny 90430-18008

So I'm missing 2 aluminum

I'll probably do a DIY writeup on this since I can't find one for a 1st gen tacoma... A bit annoying if you're new to doing this.

 

Changed my fluids numerous times never needed any new washers. Only one I ever needed was the oil pan.

 

Ive also never needed a new washer after a fluid change. Done it many many times, on multiple vehicles never once have i had one not seal back up....

 

I did this (except for the tranny) on my 1st gen a few months ago, and am pretty sure I found a guide on this site. I only had trouble with the front allen plug, but eventually got it. I did new washers, but the old ones may have worked. I had no way of knowing if the fluids were ever changed because I bought from a dealer out of state, but at 150K+, they were not as bad as they could have been.

 

I would make sure the fill bolt breaks free before draining the fluid.

A crush washer is cheap insurance...

 

Is there a need for LSD Additive for rear non elocker diffs? Read somewhere that it is required. I added some in but wonder if I needed it or not and if not, is it bad to have it if I didn't need it?

 

It will not hurt anything but you didn't need to add it either unless an aftermarket LSD type locker was added to your diff at some point. 1st gens never came with an LSD from the factory. The elocker isn't an LSD.
