Thanks for doing this. And yeah, I agree after seeing the other UOAs here, it looks like it's in line. Hopefully the copper keeps coming down.

Maybe the oil pumps are ok...just obnoxiously loud?

Appreciate you posting that info. Mine is only at 1100 kms right now but it's much quieter than before.

Engine oil coolers are often made out of copper (internally), as copper is an excellent conductor of heat. So, the engine oil flows through the oil cooler, across copper tubes. For some reason, new copper has a tendency to "leach" some of its copper into the engine oil. The process starts out rapidly, but slows down over time. Perhaps a chemist can explain a reason why this happens, but it does.

So, Tacomas with the towing package have this engine oil cooler installed. Used Oil Analysis will show elevated copper when the engine is new, because of this leaching process. It settles down by around 30K miles or so.

I have also seen this with other vehicles as well, not just Tacomas.

So my very frequent engine oil changes have not been in vain

    Lester -

I don't know the following as fact, but I am speculating: I don't think the copper that "leaches out" is in the form of particles large enough to cause damage or engine wear. In other words, the leached out copper is significant enough to get detected in oil analysis, but not large enough to affect engine wear. Still, I also change oil very frequently on new engines, to flush a lot of this stuff (including things other than copper) out. To be honest, it's probably not really much of an advantage to change the oil that much more frequently, but then again, we are Tacoma afficionados, and I am a maintenance freak.

I will say - that once I get past the break in process, my oil changes are 10,000 miles or one year, whichever happens first. I will be doing this on my 2015 Tacoma when it hits the 15,000 mile mark. I know the manual says change every 5,000 miles, but this is just between you and me, right? I know from oil analysis that the oil I am using easily will go beyond 10K miles in my case - without those tests, I wouldn't do it.

I have 4 vehicles in my family's "fleet" (All are Toyotas plus one Lexus). I don't have much free time anymore and change oil at this interval saves me a lot of time and effort.

Actually, it's under the oil filter itself. Physically, on the outside, it's a lot different from the ones pictured above that are mounted in front of the radiator, but internally, the oil passes through copper tubes/fins which is where the oil picks up the copper from. I believe the cooler in the picture above on the right is for the Power Steering.

I purchased a 2015 sept at 200 miles the piston slap is horrible.toyota claims it is normal for the 4.0 to have piston slap in a brand new engine. basically got told to go pound sand and prove it is not normal. What is going on with Toyota? When I was at the dealership there was a fj with 65,000 miles bad engine 4.0 L.they told her to go pound sand too.

Ah ha , my eyes have been opened . Thanks,

And I think we should all call this
    (TACO BABY GOAT SYNDROME )
As stated above great call perfect description of this sound.
Not trying to be that guy but I seriously wish I held out for the dura max canyon that I wanted!
Only reason I got the taco was $30,000vs $40,000, and I thought I'd be stress / problem free! Since they have had 10 years to perfect this truck. I'm done whining !

Has any body taken a mechanical oil pressure reading during taco baby goat syndrome , if so findings? If its a bad diaphragm then is it maybe air rating oil till it warms enough, if so air rated oil can't be good . We need to arm ourselves so dealers can't tell us it's normal .
I'm new to toyotas and TW are there any toyota techs on forum that maybe familiar with the oil pump on this engine . o_O

I wish I knew someone that could do this. If the oil pressure reading came out ok on cold starts and the UOAs look alright, I'd feel pretty good about things.
