Oh man, I just spent 30 minutes browsing the Ford Ranger forums.

Here on TW we're used to hearing bitching about loose this and that, striped bolts, brakes out of adjustment, uncomfortable ride, ticking and occasionally even more serious stuff like rough idle or poor performance and once in a great while a very, very serious problem like tranny or something...but not very often.

On the Ranger forum it's all about transmissions, ball joints, electrical systems and and engines being bad, the BIG stuff!

After being there for a while I really appreciate my Tacoma!!!

LOL - I don't have any of those problems with my 08'!

Granted, I only have 8,000 miles on it. ;)

I post on a Ford forum with my F-150, and those guys, while mostly nice, are complete hypocrites. Occasionally, I'll see a "Tacoma/Tundra/Toyota in General Sucks!" thread that bashes these "non-American" products. I saw a poor guy who had traded in his Ford for a Tacoma, and the flaming started immediately; they called the Tacoma a toy, a plastic truck, unreliable, among other things. The same when people post anything about Dodge or Chevy, too. They'll bash anything that isn't Ford, but fail to see the faults in their own vehicles, as literally every other thread is about brakes, transmissions, engines, exhaust, or electrical problems. On this forum, I've seen a handful of problems threads, if that.

If you only knew how many problems I had with my '06 Audi A3 during the 2 years and 33,000 miles I owned it. I'd say it was in the shop on average about once a month.

Faulty mechatronics unit in the transmission, issue with the ecu not liking cold weather and the car not starting, more boost and vacuum leaks than I care to remember, blown diverter valves, faulty PCV assemblies, intake manifold problems, bad fuel pump, cam lobe problem, bad o2 sensor, broken sunroof, rattles, check engine lights all the time, I'm sure I could go on. Bottom line, it can't get much worse in the reliability department than what I had before. That's one reason I got a Tacoma, I'm sick of that stuff. And hey, it's a Toyota, it has to be reliable. I've had my Tacoma for 3 weeks and 800 miles. So far, so good besides my stripped bolt, but that doesn't really count since I did it.

I just sold my Ranger last Sunday. It was a 1994 with 164,000 miles. I was the first owner. When I bought it I checked "All of the Above" for options. It had a few small issues (the electric mirror switch was inop), but all the important stuff was still 100%. I guess scheduled maintenance works.

I don't miss the Ranger at all thanks to my new Taco!

Yeah,I was one of those types of guys who would bash anything other than a chevrolet. Despite having nothing but problems with every chevy I've ever owned, I still kept going back and getting another one. Until that fateful day my 95 s-10 died in the parking lot of the local toyota dealer. Ever since that 2001 Tacoma, I've been hooked.

mine has been in shop for 6 days now and all i can get from them is "we don't have an answer from toyota yet as to what is wrong"

im waiting to speak with a factory rep now to see what steps i have to take to get it all resolved.

Fortunately for us, I haven't seen that kind of bashing here on this forum. THat's why I like it here... That's not so true with some of the other Toyota forums. Some of the Toyota owners love to bash jeeps (and other stuff).... as some of the jeep owners (on jeep forums) love to bash toyotas (and other stuff) - bashing is everywhere and brand loyalty is to be expected.

I hate seeing that kind of attitude on the forums.

I love my tacoma and it only has 9900 miles on it. I'm convinced that toyota quality has slipped over the years - I'm just hoping my truck is as reliable as my 96 was.

I had a Ranger and they're garbage. Nothing else to say.

I also had an Explorer ('99 V8 Limited) and, while I liked it, there were certainly issues. One thing I noticed on the Explorer/Ford forums I frequented was that people actually DID know the downfalls of their chosen vehicle. Many of them had every intention to upgrade when they could and there was a lot of appreciation for other makes and models there. Sure, you get some of the "Buy American" dolts but generally, it was fine. I still go there.

My work buddy bought a 2001 Dodge Dakota V6 DC 4 months before I got my Tacoma. 2 months after he bought this BRAND NEW truck his rear end went out. After they replaced it under warranty his tranny went out. They replaced it under warranty. Three years later his engine blew. They 'repaired' it and it blew again so he had to threaten a lawsuit to get them to replace the engine. He fought them hard and long but finally won. He still has the truck and as far as I know it's been OK. Thing is the WHOLE time he suffered that nightmare of a truck I was quietly enjoying my truck trouble-free aside from those pesky oil changes:D.....yes he did slip a few jealous comments at me-you know how work banter can be. You know, after all the shouldawouldacoulda I bet you he'd buy another Dodge...some guys just will not budge
