Maybe GM will continue to do ok or maybe when (if) the other domestic name plates get in the segment sales will dry up some for GM.

So far it looks good for GM with a more attractive demographic.

    But then there's this...

If that is a Consumer Reports article, it is worth absolutely nothing.

Success, but still couldn't outsell the 10+ years old 2 Gen Taco(Canyon/Colorado combined).

I honestly believe the chevy/gmc reliability problems will rear their ugly head soon enough. In 2 years the problems will start and make these trucks the less desirable option once again. I remember when the colorado/canyon first debuted and this is quite similar. I just hope this next generation of Tacomas is as reliable as years past.

I've seen a few people say this and have wondered on what their reasoning is based.

I don't always agree with CR vehicle recommendations. Last gen Tacoma got knocked based on ride quality for example. Not that I think Tacomas ride well but, ride may not be a priority for its customers. Of course CR provides some reason why they knocked it & I can decide.

In terms of raw, empirical data I don't get it unless one feels CR is taking bribes. My understanding is that the reliabilty portion of CRs ratings is just raw data.

Anyone care to school me here???

I wouldn't be above believing CR takes bribes. But, that is just my opinion.

But I've been sitting here trying to come up with my reasoning for doubting their reliability reports and truth be told, I think your statement is more correct that anything I have to say. Some (most) of their reliability reports come from raw data.

I just don't like the way they rate things, it's obvious to me that their primary objective is comfort. Take the Jeep Wrangler, for example. They'll say it has horrific ride quality, poor on-road handling, is noisy, has an uncomfortable seating position, but they give it 5/5 stars for off-road capability.

Well, they also give Range Rovers, T4R's, Tacoma's and Hummer H3's 5/5 for off-road capability, but they are rated far greater than the Jeep in all other categories.

Now, I don't mean to be defending Jeep over Toyota 4x4's, but the new Wrangler Rubicon's are the most capable, average consumer priced off-road vehicles to leave the sales floor. Period. I don't mean to turn this into a Jeep vs. Toyota pissing contest, but you can't argue with solid axles, twin locking diffs, 4:1 low-range, electronic swaybar disconnect, full skids, and 32" mud terrains from the factory. No other vehicle is as capable straight from the factory.

But, given it's equipment that makes it so off-road capable, such as the short wheelbase and solid axles, of course it has poor on-road handling.
It has a removable roof and doors, of course it's noisy.
But, it's put into the same category of other compact 4x4's, where CR would have you believe it's a worthless piece of shit, because they give no reference to it's comparably superior off-road performance.

They don't have the production capacity, they are selling every single one they build faster than the Tacoma.

Disagree, Taco still outselling both twins combined. It's almost a year and still don't have full capacity?? And the 3rd Gen just came out and it's already outselling both of them hahaha. You're gonna have to accept it. It won't outsell the Taco, period.

    What's your point?

More electronics, more things to break down. More sometimes doesn't mean better. I'll take reliability any day.

I'm just beginning to research on the Canyons....(Yea...I ain't skeered to admit it). It's interesting to see what Canyon/Colorado trucks have that Toyota doesn't offer. They have a special T-case that operates in Auto4WD mode where it will transfer power to the front wheels based on rear wheel slippage. The t-case has viscous coupling in it and via electronic signals to energize the clutch paks. 4Wheel disc brakes, power drivers seat... and you can option most anything in any configuration. I'm still researching...and learning. Not here to 'offend' anyone with that information.

To me it seems like the Top level Colorado vs a base modelTacoma, or a 2015 Tacoma.

A lot of those options are wrong now that the 2016 is out.

Ask Grand Cherokee owners how well the viscous coupler worked out for them. After 100K miles it would start to go out and when you made a sharp turn it would lock into 4WD. Hated that T-Case and wanted to swap in a normal 2WD-4HI-4LO T-Case.

That picture is from a long time ago on their sales page for the Colorado. It's being compared to the 2015 Tacoma, which you can see by the 236 hp and other features

I'll totally agree with you.... The key is...DON'T keep it that long!!!

We used to own a 99 Grand Cherokee (from 01-04). Sold it to my mother-in-law who had it from 04-2012. We maintained & repaired it for her all those years. Granted...she was in her 70's and never drove in the snow. The 4WD system never got 'pushed' as it was always in the standard AWD mode (60/40 I believe). We never had any problems with the diffs, trans, or engine. We had more problems with everything else! She sold it with 80K miles on it in 2012.

Personally, with my driving - 6-7,000 miles per year..... I'll sell them before they come close to 100K. My current 07 tacoma only has 73K miles on it.
