Oh yeah, now we're talking! I am admittedly a chrome addict. So, this is a way more appealing option to me. How well does the finish hold up? I am liking this better every time I look at them.

Thanks for your order Rey! I'm a little late in posting replies here, but your truck came out great! I am going to answer your question here publicly just so anyone else with the same question can have the answer:

The Nitto Trail Grappler is an awesome tire, but as has been mentioned by others, it is a pretty aggressive tire for our trucks, particularly in 285/75R16, 285/70R17 and 285/65R18. Due to the aggressive design and the slightly larger dimensions (compared to the same sizes in an all terrain tire) there is more rubbing to be expected with the Nitto Trail Grapper over the BFG All Terrain KO2. Anyone considering the two should keep this in mind. The BFG All Terrain KO2 will require minimal trimming in the aforementioned sizes, while the Nitto Trail Grappler will likely require a little more extensive trimming and possibly a body mount (aka cab mount) trim (aka chop) to keep the tires rubbing when the front suspension is compressed / under full load / under full lock turning.

This isn't something exclusive to the Nitto Trail Grappler or to the 18x9" BFD. Virtually any M/T tire in an approximate 33" diameter (see above for the sizes for 16" - 18") will likely rub on plastics and on the body mount. The tire overall diameter number that we've found as a general guideline is : 32.8". 32.8" + overall diameters tend to rub on the body mount, and tire diameters less than 32.8" do not rub, while right at 32.8" is the threshold between sometimes rubbing and not rubbing at all on the body mount. Most M/T tires in the sizes I mentioned run larger than 32.8", and therefore rub on the body mount. Most A/T tires in the sizes I mentioned are just slightly below 32.8", and generally do not rub on the body mount.

If you don't mind the occasionally rubbing (particularly if the truck is mostly street driven and the suspension isn't being compressed in tight quarters as it is in some offroad situations), or especially if you're willing to have the body mount chop modification done to your truck, then choose the tire you like best. As we can see from @LimitedTaco 's post below, he is actually reporting no rubbing on the body mount even with the aggressive 285/65R18 Nitto Trail Grapplers. I've also found that for one reason or another some trucks with the exact same setups rub and others don't.

This post worked out to be a little longer than anticipated, but this is good information for everyone to keep in mind when selecting a particular tire and tire size.

We sell about 50 sets of every other color to every one set of hyper silver BFDs, so unfortunately there just aren't a whole lot of "installed" photos of the hyper silver BFDs available. It's a great looking color for certain colored trucks, but just not our most popular finish by far.

Absolutely right. Just have the tire shop swap them over from your current wheels. Your original sensors from the limited wheels are 100% compatible with the BFDs.

Your truck came out great Rey! Thanks again!

Thanks @BC99 . Great question too. The SMC (chrome-like) finish that I posted a few weeks back has a one-year warranty. If you keep the finish clean and do not subject it to harsh chemicals or salt the finish should last for many, many years. The two things that ruin the special SMC finish the most are:
    • Road salt / chemicals used on the road to melt the snow that are slung onto the wheels and not cleaned off.
    • Chrome polish / acidic cleaners. The finish is not a chrome finish, but some customers use chrome polish or cleaners with high acidity to clean the wheels. This is not only not necessary, but it is also destructive to the finish. Just a simple, PH neutral soap and water solution with a non abrasive sponge is enough to keep the wheels looking perfect for many years.
The SMC finish, like our other finishes, is extremely durable when properly maintained.

For someone who has no plans on lifting their vehicle, what would one suggest is the best match of 18" tires and not have to deal with the rubbing? Having no mud flaps is fine but a truck which does see the occasion gravel (living on a farm or visiting others without concrete pavements) which happens relatively fast once you leave the Triangle in NC. I'd like to purchase a set of the gunmetal 18" wheels but the tire diameter/height dilemma for whatever reason is throwing me off on a stock suspension. The idea is to stay within specs as to not throw off other components i.e speedometer/low-end torque. Thanks in advance.

Discount Tire and Tire Rack both have neat little tools on their sites to compare 18's with your current setup. I went with 285's so I don't know a good no lift size.

    Hey JDM,

Was wondering if BFD offers these wheels in polished silver?
And are they only available in 18 inch? I like 17's

    Hi TacomaWorld,

I have to apologize for my late replies here on the forums for the last few months. We recently moved the shop/warehouse to a new, larger location (still here in Southern California, but about 20 miles from our old location). We've also been receiving higher and higher volumes of calls, e-mails, forum messages, and orders (thank you all for that!), and as a result, we've been much slower than we'd like in replying to forum messages. Our e-mail response times are still very fast, phone response times are instant or nearly instant, and of course we ship all orders within 24 hours. If you ever need a more immediate reply, please do not hesitate to call us anytime:

1-855-WHEEL-00 (943-3500) - Toll Free in the U.S. and Canada
    1-951-735-1100 - Office (Local/International)
1-714-390-9387 - Cell (Call or text anytime)

or e-mail: FNWheels@gmail.com. You can also stop by, but we recommend calling before stopping by:

    930 N. Elm Street #12
    Orange, CA 92867.

    Hi Pat ( @Boom671 ),

PM sent to you with the information you request. If you have any other questions please let me know.

    Hi @Guat ,

I can definitely answer those questions for you:

To have zero rubbing issues I recommend that you stick with 265/60R18 tires. This will keep the same overall diameter (roughly) as your factory wheels and tires, and you will not have to deal with any rubbing other than possibly occasionally rubbing the mud flaps if you were to install a particularly aggressive tire such as an M/T tire or a really aggressive all-terrain tire. 265/60R18 will not change your actual speed to speedometer rating either.

You can install 265/65R18 tires with stock suspension and only minimal rubbing on the mud flaps as well. Your speedometer will be off by about 3% (your speedometer will read 3% slower than your actual sped), which is not very significant.

We have also had customers install 275/65R18 tires with stock suspension, but this is a pretty aggressive tire size for stock suspension and will require trimming a lot of plastic from the inside of the fenders and inside of the front bumper if you don't lift the truck. Speedometer would off by about 5% with this tire size vs. stock tire size.

If you have any other questions at all please let me know.

That finish is "SMC - Black" aka "black chrome" (not a true chrome finish, but a special coating that looks very similar to chrome, but has the durability of powder coating).

This isn't a standard factory finish, but rather a special finish that we can have done to the wheels on a per-order basis. The additional cost is $125 per wheel, and it takes about 2 weeks for the custom finish. I don't have images of a BFD in that finish at this time, but I can take more photos of that sample Countersteer Type X wheel in SMC Black if you'd like.

We do offer the FN Wheels BFDs in titanium (hyper) silver, which is an extremely bright and shiny silver. We can also have the wheels finished in the aforementioned SMC Chrome or SMC Black finishes, which are reflective, chrome-like finishes.

If you're looking for a 17" wheel in a polished aluminum type of finish, you might like the 17x8" Konig Six Shooter, which we do have available in machined aluminum with anthracite gunmetal accents:

PM sent to you with shipping quotes and information.

Awesome! I sent you a PM Iven. Thanks! :)

Not at this time, but we will include free lug nuts and a free t-shirt for any TacomaWorld member that requests them with their order. :)
