I finally test drove the '16 today. DAMN!....sure a little soft off the bottom but lotsof get up go. I honestly liked the soft bottom, some vehicles take off a little too abruptly for me, the Tacoma eases into it....it is like "hey man, take a drag off of this, just relax, we aren't a hurry...but his buddy in the back seat, says...but if you want to go fast we have that too"

The interior...holy shit!!! They knocked it out of the park. The grill isn't that bad in person...very good looking truck. Truck feels small yet beefy over-all. They are going to sell every one they build. Really think the Canyon doesn't have a chance after driving them both.

IIRC Tacojohn only tows 10 times a year...not sure if that is enough to warrant a fullsize...having to go slow a couple few times a year is ok...slow down and smell the roses.

test drove a '16 Taco today...I am a believer...I take back ALL of my negative comments.

    ah no. :(:D.

I have been driving Toyotas for a very long time, 25 years now. I used to operate heavy equipment for a living and towed all kinds of earth moving equipment all over, with heavy trucks.

Yes, a fullsize will yank around 3000 lbs much better, but 10 days out of 365...the Tacoma will be fine, me personally I couldn't justify a fullsize for such little towing use. Might suffer a little during those days...but the rest of the time, it will be much better for daily use than a fullsize. I deal with that with my now Tacoma...98% of time it works...the other 2% I deal with it...and really it isn't all that bad. I am ok slowing down and looking at the scenery. Think some of you guys make mountians out of molehills...looking for solutions for problems you don't have. (I do the same!)

Everyone else has different needs, and different opinions...as they say YMMV.

Still not very much use...generally you yank it up to the campsite, stay a bit then yank it home...so like 20 days of tow time. that is only 5.4% use out of 365 days. Even if it was 50 days out of the year, that is stll only 13.6% use. (like you said to each their own) Just have to decide what is more important to you.

    I go with you.

First off I must say, I do NOT want a full size truck. Period, end of report.

I'm selling off a 2002 SR5 4x4 Manual with a 2.7 4 banger. Now with 160k miles on it, I'm upgrading for Cush, whistles and bells, and newness as I'm 60+.
I hauled a 2500lb A-Frame popup trailer all over California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada and Arizona with that '02.
The 2016 will have the 6 cyl and automatic, and I think Im most nervous about the lacking performance. ALL THAT BEING SAID: I drive like a long haul truck driver. When the truck says "hill, gear down, go slow", that's what I do, and join the rest of the heavy haulers. I KNOW this truck will do fine, just let it work!!
If you're hauling a trailer and you have to keep going 60, 70, 80mph, well, that's what you do. Ill see you at the campground up in the mountains. When I get there, I'll be able to talk about the scenery along the way and how well the truck performed.

I think a lot of guys that are buying Tacomas are coming from cars and never really towed before, yet they want to have it perform like a car even while loaded down. I know my wife was a little shocked how slow we had to go with our move from AZ to Idaho in the moving truck I rented, a little 26' diesel bobtail that was built to haul stuff...she thought we would be doing the speed the limit the whole way...ummm no. Just relax and enjoy the scenry, we will get there...

^^^This. I never actually had the chance to tow with my 2nd gen. I've had my 3rd gen for about 2-3 weeks now and rented a small uhaul trailer to tow some flooring. Between the trailer dry weight and the flooring I had about 2000lbs behind me. Honestly tho I didnt even really notice it was there

I have a hard time believing that little UHaul loaded is 3,000 pounds. I pulled this thing from Indianapolis to Tallahassee and averaged 14 mpg even going through the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. The car and trailer were right at 6,5XX pounds and that is a steel car hauler. I think your altitude made it feel like it was 3,000 pounds or the trailer was loaded with cement blocks.

Fair enough, I guess. If these are giant mountain passes then I don't think there really is a good option for towing. If I were towing anything that had my vehicle close to 50% of its towing capacity and I were doing this through huge mountain passes....I would be more concerned about braking power than I would be about motor power.

Mine didn't either but I did have trailer brakes. There were a few time in stop and go that I could feel a little fade in the front but for the most part, it handled it pretty well. In my three years of owning that truck, that's one of 3 times it towed something. The other 2 times being a 6x12 uhaul.

Yeah I could handle not going fast a few times a year. I think it is still going to blow my gen 1 out of the water as far as towing goes. My 2002 (new at least) has 190 hp, 220 ft/lb of torque. Gen 3 has 88 more HP and 45 more ft/lb of torque. I have often worried of towing with a smaller displacement engine puts more stress on it and maybe it could hurt long-term reliability but I don't think that is necessarily true. The tow package keeps your transmission cool and my Casita has trailer brakes.
Farthest I'd take my trailer would be from Cheyenne, Wy to Moab UT. Maybe a 6 hour drive or so but obviously that is a huge pass to go over. After you hit the highest point of I70 you have a lot of steep grades to go down and brakes beging to work overtime.

You're miss reading what I said. Car people that never owned a truck want these new trucks to handle like a car regardless of what is being hauled/towed....they want to zoom up over mountain passes with ease no matter what. At least is what it seems like.

Kinda why the trucks have evloved to what they are today. Which isn't a bad thing, why I started buying Toyota trucks in the first place...when I opperated heavy equipment/trucks all day long. My personal vehicle I wanted something small and mild mannered....a daily/weekender vehicle if you will. Tacoma fits that niche prett darn good.

Old body on frame cars actually towed pretty well.

The '16 feels like a rocket compared to the 3.4. Willing to bet you'll hardly even notice your camper back there coming off a 1st gen.

I was on the fence just like you with the mid vs. fullsize. Since I drove the '16 Taco the other day, I am no longer on the fence. Tacoma all the way. It isn't perfect but it is darn close for the needs/wants. The number of times of year that I "could" use a fullsize just isn't worth it to me. Which is darn near about the same amount you need. So it might strain a little on passes a couple times a year, big deal.

Went again and test drove a F150 just to make sure. The F150 is a very nice truck no doubt about it, just too much for my needs, even if spending the exact same money. That and I just like Toyota better when it comes down to it, have been driving these thigns for so long, my hands fall naturally on the controls, everything is where it "should" be...where as another brand I feel lost in the interior. Loose very little money over the long haul if you decide to sell. The Tacoma just ticks off more pluses than minuses on my list.

Yeah as a daily driver a mid-size is much easier to live with. I would probably get a DCLB so that will be even bigger but what I don't like about full size trucks is their width. I know the new Tacoma revs high but it is so smooth when it revs. Doesn't scream like my Tacoma does when it goes north of 3,000 RPMs. You barely notice it.
