The only difference between 2way and 3 way is that there are two drivers on a 2 way, typically a tweeter and woofer while a 3 way will add another woofer in between the frequency range of the woofer and tweeter. 3 way are more complicated than 2 way. Sound quality doesn't really have anything to do with the # of ways at this price range. I found 2ways last a little longer than 3 way. but that all depends on the quality of set up as well. I install a lot of Polk audio and have had pretty good success with it. check out crutchfield.com if you haven't already. you can talk with advisors and their costumer service is top notch.

I sort of have the same notion. If I replace stock speakers for something better with a bit of extra power and I eventually plan on adding the sub, why not throw the amp now with the speakers :D

For what its worth..... The factory speakers aren't necessarily the problem ( though i am not saying they are the best either)......I had a 2001 camry and I changed the head unit (pioneer deh-p780mp) and installed a sub in 2008, but kept all the factory speakers (no amp) and loved it. I just used a HPF from the head unit for the speakers and sent only lows to the sub. If you get a good head unit, and tune it properly, the factory speakers work just fine. Now, I will say I had to change the front speakers when one blew (5 years later), and installed some alpines and it was even better, but I still kept the rear ones factory....just my two cents

Don't see many people wanting to change out the stock head unit bc of all the integrated features

Yeah I don't plan to, that's why I just would rather get some nice speakers.

My head unit is staying for good.

They look nice but for $300 + tearing the door apart they'd have to be MUCH better.

I am getting the JBL but want to add another sub behind the driver side rear seat. Anyone know what the dimensions are or know a box that will fit. I am going to put a grill on my JL TW1 but need a box to fit.

I found them for $219 on fleabay. Crutchfield is good for choice but I have found their pricing to be way out of line on most of their items.

what, what, what, why would you do this? You are going to run 2 subs and 2 amps?

The jbl sub is not significant compared to an added Jl. I wanted the jbl for the upgraded speakers and I got it added to my truck for 400$ so couldn't turn it down.

Yes. The amp is also powering the speakers and sub it's not just a mono from what I have read.

Sorry but on the JBL you should have turned it down. Pure garbage in my humble opinion. I'm in the process of upgrading my system, and it's not just the speakers or the head unit or the amp it's all of it. Replacing one without addressing the others is just going to lead to disappointment down the road.

The stock head unit is wonderful with all the system integration and such, but along with all that good stuff is a head unit that has very little power and a signal that is modified so that it doesn't blow the crappy speakers. So the first step in this process is with the signal. Sure you can change out the head unit and loose all the fun stuff, or you can add a signal processor that will take the low power stock signal and clean it up. Either way you're looking at some cash. A good head unit will run you about a grand. Same with a decent signal processor. Either way an absolute must.

So once you have a good signal you have to deal with the power. No use having a good signal at 20 Watts. Amps come in all shapes and price ranges, but the better the amp the cleaner and easier it is on the speakers. Power does not kill speakers distortion does. For a system with a sub around 1500 Watts is a minimum, but more importantly a very low distortion at that power point is key. Unfortunately again about a grand.

And finally the speakers. These in my opinion are the least important of the bunch. As long as they can handle the power most speakers will sound good with the right signal and right amount of power. Don't necessary agree with some of the earlier statements. To me the speakers is the absolute last place I put my money.

The system I am working on in mine is with the stock head unit, BitOne signal processor, Audiosn Voce 5.1k amp, Hertz Mille mid drivers, Hertz Mille tweeters, and A pair of Sundown SD-2 8" subs. I've run most of this before, but the subs are a new addition.

I know this is all high end SQ stuff and I'm not suggesting you have to dump this kind of money. The point I am making is get the best bang for whatever your budget is. Signal, then power, then speakers, and you'll have a nice system.

How would you change car settings without the factory head unit?

I had JBL in my 12 and really liked the average/good sound of it, really perfect as far I needed. 16 w/o it kinda sucks. After reading "every" post and talking to local audio shops that want $1200+ to do something close, I've decided on JBL GTO 93 6x9. I have read all the posts that this isn't the way to go without a sound equalizer thing and an AMP but as far I can tell no one k say they tried it on a 16. So tomorrow I will install and report. Wish me luck!!
