Over the past couple of months I have been to several Toyota dealerships in state and out of state. The sad thing is I have to see one salesperson who knows anything about these new tacos. I can sense I know more about them than they do. I have been able to get tons of info from this forum about these trucks. This leads me to say why dont dealerships make their salespeople visit these forums maybe they will learn something. I ask one salesperson could you guys get me a limited in long bed (I already knew the answer to that) she said of course we can and it will take about 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. YEA RIGHT. You see I already from this forum that only 3 percent of tacos are going to be long bed. I got on the Toyota web site last week and tried to configure a OR long bed in siliver and the system would not let me. I could do it in white or mgm but not siliver. A good sales person would know this sort of info. Don't try to sell me something I don't want just so you can make your monthly quota. I am just going to have to wait until the taco buying frenzy is over with and Toyota production catches up with demand. Hopefully by then I would have found a decent salesperson

Don't listen to them. Tell them what you want. Not what they think they know.

I hate salesmen purely because they ACT like they know what they're selling, but they don't. What annoyed me when I test drove a 3rd gen was the salesmen just flicks switches and buttons reading out what they are, and just flips in and out of 4wd. Just a pet peeve when people just press all the buttons for no good reason.

Honestly I feel like I'd make an amazing salesman.

Sell me an off road short bed manual quicksand for 29K. Then, you're a good salesman.

I have to say most are terrible!! My guy was really good but he also owns one and had a 16 on the way also.

But as for them needed to know different cars, big deal. Most of the basic crap is the same.

Salespeople in general cease to amaze me. I remember when I picked up my Tacoma and noticed the temp gauge wasn't working. I proceeded to ask the salesperson what the deal was and his response included, "That's just the universal garage door opener."

    EDIT: Grammar

Then you should try it. Good salesmen make a decent living.

I find it incredible Salespeople don't read to join product forums, however. If I worked a 10 hour day selling cars I doubt I would want to go home and hang on Brand based Internet forums. Toyota has a lot of different cars and each has their own forum so it is not as easy as one would think. The 4Runner,Scion, and RAV forums are very busy.

One of the things I learned in my search is that the sales training on new models only occurs after there are several units on location...then a rep comes in and hosts a "Tacoma Day" at one dealership and salesmen from neighboring stores come in for an hour or so, drive it around the block, asks questions of the rep and then head back to their stores. Since the supply took so long to build up on lots, many of these "demo days" are only just now occuring.

Yes, that's why I have been trying to transition our store to have specific product specialist. Have 2 designated specialist per model and when we have a customer coming in a looking for it having that associate help out. It is tough to find associate that have a passion to learn about all 20 product lines including scion with an average of 4 trims per car and additional package per trim. It can be a bit overwhelming.

Gotta love auto correct. :annoyed: Even though these are "first world problems", they should know the main features of the vehicle. If the dealership wants to make a sale, they need to have staff that understands the product. Customer service is what makes or breaks many dealerships. If I can't trust the individuals who are marketing the product, how can I trust who they have working in the back? It's called responsibility and customer satisfaction.

Very long and tough hours. To get to 6 figures you have to work 60-80 hours a week. Nights, Saturday's, very few days off.

Agreed... I live in Fort Myers Florida and my dealership still knows almost nothing about these trucks. They told me the JBL option was only available in Colorado.... Found a good dealership in Clearwater... they seemed to know a lot more... bye bye local dealer...

Salespeople spend a lot of time on the job drinking coffee and bull shitting with the other employees. I am sure if they used some of that time to check out forums they would learn more about there product

Try Stadium in Tampa as well. That's where I got mine, and I think they were the most knowledgeable, and had a bunch of them on the lot as well. PM me if you want my sales guy's info, he worked pretty hard I thought, and if he didn't know the answer off the top of his head he immediately looked it up...

The vast majority of Toyota buyers could not care less about these things, what we see online are enthusiasts. Enthusiasts make up a very small minority of buyers. Most people want to walk around the lot and pick out the one they think looks the best, and the salesperson has to steer them to something they can afford/get approved for. Start talking about what equipment/features they CAN get, and you'll lose the buyer real quick. Gives them more to think about and less incentive to buy now. A good salesperson unfortunately has to sell what they can see, not see what they can sell.

When you're making $100/$200 a car, how can you afford to spend time configuring cars? Because you know once they finally land on a vehicle, then they're going to spend more time haggling the price. As a buyer who wants to steal the vehicle, you've got to come in knowing what you want and put the cards on the table. That's the way this particular business model works, not saying I like it or it shouldn't improve, it is what it is.

The best (making the most money) salespeople I've ever met know absolutely nothing about the cars.
