Is there any cure for that '1 rear window open helicopter thumping' noise?

Those of you with quad cabs and dogs know what Im talking about. Roll down the back window to let Poochy get some fresh air, get above 40 MPH and you get that awful WHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMP air vibration noise in the cab. Only way to cure it is to open a window. I notice the noise lessens quite a bit when she actually pokes her head out. Will a set of rain guards or other product break up the wind stream enough to stop this horrible sound?

 

In a word no. It's just not a Tacoma thing, it happens in other vehicles as well.

Just a suggestion but you shouldn't let hour dog stick his head out the window. One small rock could easily blind him.

This is caused by a low pressure zone as air curves in and out of the opening of the window. Its actually the same concept of what makes an airplane fly. You can make it go away by opening the opposite window to equalize the pressure.

 

Just like one small nail could puncture your tire. It's a chance you have to take, but I've never first hand saw a dog become blind by poking its head out the window.

To answer your question OP, the noise isn't really preventable. The only way to delete the sound is by opening/cracking another window. I have rain guards and they don't help in any way.

Personally, no I wouldn't. That's to say not everyone follows/believes in them. Look at Florida's no helmet option. I'm just saying that plenty of people do it everyday without blinding their dogs. My dog even rides in the bed during summer.

 

I crack open the sliding rear window a touch, seems to help a lot.

 

To each his own. I like the idea of avoiding a vet bill. I've had small rocks impact my helmet face shield and it would have done serious damage.

 

I'm not saying you don't have a valid point, but the chances are slim in my book. Just like many people don't like dogs riding in the bed. I just don't want my truck reeking from lake water and dog in the summer.

 

Nope, I wouldn't want a wet mut in my truck as well but I would strap the dog crate in the bed. It all comes down to what you consider accepted risk.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

 

If you crack both windows equally, you should't have pressure issues nor will you blind your dog.

One of my boys jumped out of a window that was rolled down last summer. It was my own fault for having the window down that far, but now I'm pretty skiddish to do anything buy crack it to let a little air in - definitely not as liberal with it as I used to be.

To add some actual value to this thread, crack a front window. This is an all-car problem, not a Taco problem. Cracking a front window, even a little bit, will equalize the pressure.




EDIT: I was going 10mph down the road that I live on. I took my boy directly to the vet, and he was 100% fine - just got a few scrapes. I felt like the worst owner ever!

Roll down another window OP. My dog likes to try the air at both sides of the truck. Yours might also.

 

I just keep my boy and girls locked in a closet, cause like dogs get hurt being like dogs and stuff.

 

Wrong there's more chance of a rock hitting them in a vehicle then like anything else. Locked closer is the best, just make sure to clean it every few weeks.

 

I like to keep my boys tucked under my left leg until I'm ready to use them!

Do you wear a seatbelt when in your truck? Wear helmet/eye protection when driving a motorcycle? Ear protection when shooting firearms?

Do a little research and you will find, the only safe place for a dog in a vehicle is in a secured kennel. And...research the kennels. I was shocked. It's why I bought the best one available (short of a mounted dog box).
