Working on joints now. This is a 90 degree joint with 1/8" 6010at 85 amps. . And this is welding two flat pieces of 5/32" with 3/32" 6010 at 65 amps. (Any higher amperage with the 3/32" and I feel like I am having a ton of undercutting, maybe I need to speed it up or just stick with 65 amps. Feedback is appreciated. I think I need a better finish (farthest right of the bead), just looks ugly. But I feel like it's progress. Thanks to a fellow TW member, I got a bunch of scaps to work on and it's been helping immensely! Got a nice 24" square 1/4" steel plate that a buddy hooked me up with. Now to find some posts to make some legs and I will finally have a proper table to work on!

I think the uncomfortable position your in is really hindering your performance !!

    Why 6010 ??

I have 100 pounds in unopened cans I bet I have not touched in 10 years.

If I need to SMAW it is 7018

I was only using 6010 because that was what I was told to buy (by a retired gas company welder). I went out and bought some 3/32" 7018 and yes it is much easier. I see what you mean. I threw the 24 x 24" square plate on my Weber BBQ to create a makeshift table. This is what I did today. This is my second pass- joining two flat plates with beveled edges together.

I never imagined there where so many types of rod. It trips me out how different each rod is. I like how it makes stick much more technical.

Maybe this is weird to say but I like that you don't know what's under the slag until you hammer it off. It's like a surprise gift. But at the same time, it sucks that you can't really see it under the hood like you can with 6010. But I found it easier to be consistent with it. Or maybe it was the fact that I finally listened and made it a priority to fancy up a makeshift welding table so I'm off the floor

I'll have to try speeding up on the caps on monday.

The only time we can run anything besides stringers is our hot pass (Teacher said we could run 2 stringers or weave it), but I still like to practice weaving.

Thanks, our official test is on the 30th, which just happens to be the day we get back from thanksgiving break, so I won't have access to welding equipment for 11 days before the test.

If I get hired all I'll have to do is pass a drug test and background/security clearance, then i wait until February or March when they begin the training process.

The 7018 looks good, damn near perfect in the center, a little fast in the beginning, and mainly inconsistent the last little bit, but it looks a lot better than my first 7018 beads.

Thank you for the feedback. Helps to know what is looking like it should (I know it's really about the structural strength but how can you know until you bend it), and what looks too fast/slow. I guess it will just have to be some muscle memory (perfect practice makes perfect) since you can't really see what you're putting down while you're doing it. I was expecting it to come out looking like a pretty smooth caterpiller but it came out looking more like dimes. Looking forward to working more with the 7018. I'm glad I finally listened to wyoming09

Ok I can see some people get so programmed from what joints and materials they weld that is all the can think of when telling some one.

Gas company no doubt at the time mandated everything 6010

Yes 6010 has it`s place root passes on pipe or plate It is great for tacking .

It was great in the strip mines where any sort of prep work was frowned upon as a waste of time welding on rusty dirty steel. They are getting some what better growing out of this mind set

The SMAW process is so very versatile allowing one to weld steel, stainless steel, cast iron and steel and aluminum .

Just by changing electrodes and dialing the welder in for what your doing

Yes they make Aluminum Electrodes for SMAW because seasoned dirty aluminum is a major pain to get clean results can be interesting .

In fact with the Lower cost spool guns they might not even be around any longer from lack of demand.

Can anybody recommend a program that I can draw things on for a plasma table? I just need to be able to save the files in as a dxf file.

    Free? or paid?

I use autocad, it's not cheap though.

Theres some free solutions I believe like Solid Edge 2d cad, and Draftsight. I've personally never used either of them though

I'm hoping for a free one. I don't do enough business to need a paid program, I'm just trying to save some time and money because the people that cut my stuff are an hour and a half away and charge me to transfer my stuff from paper to their program.

Have you tried SketchUp? You'll need a third party plug in to import/export DXF/DWG files but it's free.

Draft sight works pretty well for an alternative to autocad. You can do plenty without paying.
