A Raptor has such a better suspension than the Tacoma. Would need to put like $3,000 into a Tacoma to be able to fallow one at speed on a woop filled road.

It would probably also depend on the cab configuration he needs. New the 4 door Raptors were much more expensive than the extended cab ones. A quick search on Autotrader around me, although no where near Maine, has either extended cabs between 65k miles to 100k for under $35k, or the few double cabs are at or over 100k miles. Personally I know I wouldn't spend that much money on something with those kind of mileage numbers. I'd hope a much lower mileage Tacoma would hold more of its resale value than an already high mileage Raptor, then trade it in whenever the 2017s show up. Then again if he is using the truck for any sort of recruitment, the Raptor would fit UTI's image much better.

He's making triple the money now. Go with the Raptor.... he can easily pay for the repairs on a disposable, American engineered vehicle every 4 months.

... Plus, it will give the UTI candidates a taste of what they will be repairing during their career.

I've owned a 2006 trd sport tacoma a 2010 raptor and now a,2015 tacoms . Only had the raptor for 1 year should have never traded my supercharged tacoma in on it. Had nothing but problems with the raptor bent the frame behind the bed doing light (very light) offroading . Bent so bad bed touched the cab . Had electrical problems windows would go down over night sunroof would open . Had the radio replaced by factory 4 times it would just shut off . Leather seats started wearing very bad all this with a truck under 10000 miles . 2 of my friends own raptors all have frame bends and electrical problems .

Tell him to look down in his pants. If something is hanging down there then get a Tacoma, if there's not... well then you have a sister you never knew you had.

You cannot compare a Raptor to a Tacoma. The Raptor is far above the Tacoma. It really depends on what he wants to do with it. Comparing a Raptor to a Tacoma is like comparing a Tundra to a Tacoma. In fact the Tundra is not even as good as the Raptor so the Tacoma comparison is not even in the same league. If he wants a heavy duty off road truck he needs the Raptor. If he wants a truck that is decent and looks good then he needs to Tacoma.

    $3000 is a little too generous. I'm thinking $4-5k for comparison. :D

I used to love the looks of the raptor, but got tired of it after a while. On the other hand, I've loved the looks of my tacoma since the first day I got into her. I'm glad I never cheated on Mrs. Taco, because she's gonna look good for a long time and get me around. Ms. Rapter is a timebomb after 150K miles, all her parts start falling out and she starts getting passed around by dealerships and ridden by everyone.

It sounds like he's better suited for the Raptor. As someone has already stated it will do more to persuade the gear head kids to spend their money. It's already set up for anything he'll want to do from the factory, though I would be leery of purchasing anything used and of high miles. I would imagine used Raptors are like many used sports cars, they get driven hard then sold before blowing up...

I'm also suggesting the Raptor because it sounds like your brother probably just got this job and doesn't have much in the way of liquid cash available, which is required to modify a truck. Unless he finds a used modified Tacoma he can get full financing on.

In his shoes I would purchase a clean used older Tacoma for under $20k, throw a 2" lift on it with the appropriate sized tires. I would then just throw money in the bank.

TLDR: Raptor is cool for the kids and gets more out of financing.

Thanks guys, I guess this wasn't meant to actually try and convince him one way or another just really to try and help him out. At this point he really dosent know what he wants haha. He has been asking me about other vehicles to, sti's, vwr32, even mentioned a diesel truck not that I know much about any of these. If any of you knew him he isn't really a "truck guy" really. But is looking at all his options for the nothern Maine winters. He dosent want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with no service. Right now he has a 2012 vwgti, not great in the snow. Thanks again guys.

You could buy a Tacoma TRD OR for $20k, put in $5k for offroad mods to Baja-fy it, boom!, awesome truck even if it has 100,000 or more miles on it. Personally I like a truck for tight trails, and the Tacoma is smaller than the Raptor.

Let him get the Raptor. Then when you have to go pick him up from the ford dealer you can get a good laugh out of it.
