The hardest thing....messure 10x and drill once. There is no give. You drill two holes insect your poly-nuts....if your mounting holes don't line up with your poly-nuts....oh know!! There's nothing you can do. So be careful when you drill!

But seriously...great tool! You'll love it!!

I had a clean 87 4Runner 22RE 5-Speed and it was an absolute blast. I loved being able to take the top off and cruise around. It is hard to find a clean one at a decent price, it seems most of them are pretty well beat one. Pretty much what @SCRunner12 said. The 22RE/5-Speed is a great combo, with a good run hills weren't too much a problem, it had a pretty strong 3rd gear. I would smoke my step-dads 88 3.0/Auto 4Runner up hills, but the 3.0/Manual isn't too bad of a combo. It does have a torsion bar suspension which makes it difficult to lift, but there is a ton of aftermarket support.

Thanks for the info man. I already knew a majority of this info since orginally I was looking at a regular car truck, but since I already have a tacoma I rather remove the top and be able to haul around more friends and chicks when I go wheeling hahahaha. But ya even though the solid axle would be great like you said costs a bit more and I'm on a very low college budget. Most likely will get a 86-89. How weak is the V6, I'm hoping to get this project 4runner able to go up hills bigger and better than my current 4 cylinder prerunner 1st gen Taco. Do you think I would be able to still do better in a 4 cyl?

Thanks for the heads up, although rust on fenders isnt a big deal for me. I'm not too big on keeping it look pretty, gonna beat on it anyways hahaha.
Do you think it would be stronger than my current 04 Taco Prerunner 4 cyl? I'm hoping to make this 4 runner much more capable than my truck. I've mostly seen 4 runners made into crawlers and not trail runners, so this is why I'm contemplating.

The 3.0/Auto is a dog, like I said I would smoke my step-dads 88 4Runner up hills with my 22RE/Manual. I drove my friends 89 3.0/Manual and it was too bad. The 3.0 does have head gasket issues, but by know a lot of them should have been replaced. The 22RE is rumored to be the pinnacle of reliability but it only has like 114 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. When I sold my 4Runner to my brother he put a Total Chaos L/T kit on it and he liked it, but I smoked him in sand drags in my V8 Grand Cherokee. The 22RE would bog down halfway up the hill. With 4LO you will be able to climb bigger hills than your Prerunner, since you are multiplying the torque of the engine, which you can't do on a Prerunner. So I would say you will be able to climb bigger hills offroad than your current truck since you have that extra gearing. But it kind of depends on what you want to do with it.
