Based on how they grade the awards for intended purpose and making improvements to the segment, I can understand the decision (still need to read it). I will go drive one of the twins, but prob not buy one because I want MT. The silver lining is that better competition will force Toyota to innovate and maybe push specs better just a bit more.

Works for me, I don't need bragging rights, and while I am all about TY, it is good to see domestic automakers improving.

But then there is QDR and resale value, ha!

Motor Trend has a big hard on for GM, especially these last few years. They love the new Caddys, Camaros, Corvettes, and Colordo like a fat kid on smarties.
I was surprised in 2015 that the F150 lost out to the Colorado/Canyon. And now again in 2016? Because they offer the diesel?
But in the GM twins defense (for 2015) The Colorado was an all new blank sheet design that was well executed. Yes we know it wont last the long term and maintain insane resale value like the Tacoma, but as an all new offering in the segment it was home run. And this 3rd gen Taco isn't a game changer. Its a few updates on the 2nd gen. Updates that should have came out back in 2012!

True! And any bit of market share that the Tacoma loses means potentially lower prices for us buyers

Yeah, I never thought the 2016 would be Truck Of The Year. Usually the truck of the year is a brand new and fresh model. The 2016 Tacoma is (as we all know), not really new. Also, Toyota never cares about spec pissing contests. Long-term QDR is never recognized in these things. I do think it's good that the Colorado diesel one though. It only shows automakers that mid-size trucks and mid-size diesels are worthy of attention.

Poors numbers should mean rebates, incentives, discounts if sales slow down. Then again this is "Toyota"

Does it all really matter in the end? If you want a mid sized truck, test drive them all and make the decision to buy the one that you like the best.

I considered the Colorado and Canyon, and they are both really good trucks that were executed well.

At the end of the day, I love my Tacoma and am happy I made the choice of it over the twins. I don't really care about a bunch of automotive industry nerds that made a choice based on their personal opinion of what is better to constitute TOY. In my mind, my Tacoma is TOY!

Let them have their bragging rights. Its all they have..The Colorado is a Malibu with a bed......All of us could have bought one of the twins and did not.

How many of those writers really take a truck truly to it's potential in off-roading? Maybe 1 in 200/300/400? How many site behind a computer, writing about specs, handling, ergonomics, etc? Maybe every one of them? Now you put these people that work inside a cozy office, behind a small desk, hammering away on a keyboard and see what they like. The twins interior is definitely better than the Tacoma. No doubt about that, from the leather power seats, adjusting steering wheel, stitching on the dash, etc. This is what these people see, like, enjoy. Of course it's going to win truck of the year. They will compare some numbers for power, MPG, cargo space, hauling and stuff like that, because it is a truck. But the writers will lean toward the creature comforts in any comparison.

And my wife wondered why I stopped subscribing to Motortrend. No matter the comparison, GM wins. Always a crock of shit.

Meh both GM and Toyota had recalls on their trucks in first month of production. Atleast Colorado's gasoline engine does not leak oil like Exxon Valdez.
Quality seems the same just looking at the forum. Neither is old Toyota quality.
Also Colorado does not need tow haul button engaged just to climb a hill to grocery store.
    Its a wash.
However, Diesel engine in smaller pickup is ultimate toy. If anybody is planning to build ultimate Exploration vehicle in US or Canada.... that Durmax Colorado is a buy. I can only imagine what all those modification shops will do with it.

While I disagree with Motor Trend's decision, I understand it. There really isn't anything innovative and new about the 2016 Taco. Toyota is more concerned with QDR than anything else and that is why I ordered one last month! I've owned enough GM pieces of crap over the years and won't make that mistake again. I still remember my 1988 Chevy Corsica stalling as I was accelerating onto the highway because I disconnected the battery the day before and it took the computer a good two weeks to relearn everything after you disconnected the battery. While the computer was in "re-learn" mode the car would run rough and just stall randomly. The real winner will be decided in the sales numbers, and we all know how that will turn out...:headbang:
