Just wondering if the new transmission and engine are actually new or modified existing pieces?
I heard the 3.5L V6 comes from the Lexus line and takes the Atkinson cycle from the Prius. Is this true?
    What about the transmission?

Yes. The new V6 is an existing Toyota engine. Complex with port and direct injection. Not exactly getting rave reviews. Less torque and combined with the new 6 spd that wants to up shift for mileage, not working for power or mileage. But if you want to stick with Tacoma, 4cyl. even worse.

New engine and transmission is great, more powerful and better gas mileage than 2nd gen. My buddy who owns a 13 drove my 16 this past weekend and loved it. He called the dealer that night :)

I understand the new engine is new in the sense that its new to the Tacoma, but has been used in other Toyota vehicles (in a different configuration). This eases my mind a little, at least the engine has some history and reliability.
The transmission on the other hand is what I'm curious about. Have they used it in other vehicles or is this truly a new transmission. Hopefully its reliable, would hate for my transmission to break down after a few thousand miles.
Is this newness the cause of a few vibration issues we're seeing in the 4x4 AT in the SR5, Sport and Limited trim models?

I believe the motor is also used in the Lexus RX and GS, but in slightly different configurations. I wouldn't use either as a basis for comparison as the configurations are not the same and Lexus' production materials and quality controls are higher than Toyota's. The Tacoma's new motor is much more complex than its predecessor, but I imagine it will prove to be reliable. It's a Toyota after all.

I want to say I saw someone post the transmission is the same 6-speed auto from the 4Runner. But I cant remember entirely. Either way they said it was used previously in a Toyota. Just not 100% sure what model, and there was no source. I'm sure it's an transmission from some other Toyota.

As of the 2015 model year the 4Runner still uses a 5 spd auto. I don't know about 2016 models.

What about the transmission? Do we still have to check trans fluid level from under the truck? Any trans dipstick this time? Thanks

From what I've gathered it is a "new" transmission. It's being used in little 4 cylinder vans in other parts of the world and is the same unit in both the 3.5L and 2.7L Tacoma.

It's definitely NOT the same trans as any 4runner. 4Runner still uses the trusty A750 transmission that is found in older V8 Toyota's and 2nd gen Tacoma.

It's going to be tough to beat the A750, and most likely it won't be close. Toyota cheaped out on it. If they wanted a real truck trans they would have put in an A760 found in the 4.6L Tundra and a version of it is also used in Lexus cars like the IS350 into the V6 Tacoma. Should have left the new little van motor trans for the 4 cylinder Tacoma.

Thanks for the "new" 6-speed auto Toyota.

Do you think he'd put your right nut to good use if they don't use that tranny in the next gen 4runner?
