I like the clean tight bass you get from good 6x9 and a sealed sub. But once in a while. I like to blast the bass hard. That's where 2 12s come into play that I have in my other car.

The problem with most setups i hear : they have to much focus on Mid bass from a driver thats not full capable and the tonality changes towards more of a muddy sound. To one person, they will love that but then you have another who will hate. Sound is so subjective

For me 2 10" IDQ subs and a decent amp (JL or Fosgate) can deliver clean-, tight-, punchy-bass. I wonder if I could do 1x12" and get similar results for the limited space available.

I can make an 18 sound as tight as a 10

The most important aspect in bass reproduction is the box. Get the volume just right with a 12 and it would product just about the same characteristics ( given that everything ells is the same ). This doesnt always mean "just right" as the manufacture recommended size either. That would be a starting point but if you a deeper bass extension, then you have to stuff the box or make it slightly larger as an example.

With Small modifications you can get 2 12s behind the seats of a tacoma sealed, just like @ZMan2k2 did.

@manethon I'd probably stick to 1x12" due to other priorities lol

Then its an easy fit, as long as you have the required depth

Sorry to hijack your thread a bit  however I am looking for someone in the area with a 2016 DC so I can get some enclosure templates and if you are willing to let me take part of your truck apart to do this I will build you an enclosure for free! :)

Two 12 is nice over 1 for 2 reasons. First ones obvious, it'll be louder. Second reason. If I want to be easy with my volume and have it at a normal level. You can keep that deep clean bass with 2 subs. If you only had 1. You'd have to run the sub harder and that'll increase distortion.

There should be zero distortion of setup right and as long as the sub is getting clean power from the amp there shouldn't be any issues at all. Remember Distortion doesnt really come from the sub, but its a byproduct of your amp clipping/ Distorting and the sub is producing it based on that. This can be seen when the normal AC cycle changes to DC. This is why i always believe in bigger wire than "quoted or referenced" and why i always buy a bigger amp than what the sub is rated for. Its SOOOO much better over power your sub vs underpowered and driving your amp into the clipping range

Good stuff in this post. Particularly the last statement. Although I disagree about the JBL system being pure garbage. I'd say its pretty damn nice for what it is. Automobiles are awful sound stages due to ambient noise so going for an all out SQ build is borderline asinine in my opinion. For the price the JBL system brings a lot to the table... a 500W 6.1 amp'd system integrated directly with everything from the factory. Its no 808 system but its better than average and should suffice even for audio enthusiasts... a true audiofile isn't going for SQ in an automobile anyway. They'll probably have some studio quality cans for casual listening and a killer home theater system.

I am considering going non-JBL and getting a DSP, C5's, a stealthbox w/ a 10TW3 all run by an Alpine PDX V9 but when I start thinking about ripping off all the panels in a brand new truck I think, why not just get the JBL and have $3k+ to spend on an icon stage 4 and wheels/tires.. just my 2 cents though.

I live in Maryland! Lol but seriously....if you come out this way anytime soon let me know

I built a custom box from fiberglass that fits in the side of my trunk on my civic. Probably should've used a air grinder to get it smooth but that boat resin is a solid piece. Anyhow I put one 12" in a sealed box and it sounds pretty awesome in my little civic. Fiberglass is a pain tho
