First oil change look what I found in oil

Dealer said bring my truck in at 6 months and they will check that all the bolts are still tight. Then at 12 months they will change the oil. They will change mine yearly because I will never get near the recommended miles for an oil change in one year.

 

I'm a little itchy with my vehicles to, 2016Taco. I think I just might try to change all the fluids in my truck sooner rather than later during the "break in period". I enjoy doing these changes myself, unless it's 90 degrees and 70% humidity outside. Then not so much fun.

 

Tell them you take frequent short trips where the engine doesn't get up to operating temp. That will get you on the 6-month / 5k mile schedule.

It can't hurt if they're free anyway

 

You seem to have listed all the big names,

Do you work for Hyundai, Suzuki, Izuzu, Kia, or any other immerging manufacturer? ... or Ford?

 

So what is the best practice here? Change the engine oil / gear oil (manuals) / ATF / diff oil at 1500 miles or so?

Or go with what it says in the owner's manual and let all the metal shavings get chewed on until the recommended change periods?

I've only driven beaters before now, I have no clue on how to properly maintain a brand new vehicle

 

Or this stuff hasn't been through the filter because it's heavy enough to sit at the bottom of the sump.

 

I work in a shop where we run new engines every day. When we drain the oil, this is normal. That's why you're breaking it in - stuff wears to fit and those particles go somewhere. Just as long as you don't see big chunks after the first change, you're fine.

 

I think this making mountains out of mole hills...new truck paranoia. What does one of the resident auto technicians say, @Aussiek2000? Let's see what he thinks.

 

Yet even if we don't do this early oil change, these things will run for 200K+ miles.

 

My evidence that everyone SHOULD do a "break in" oil change? BMW.

BMW says all their cars are good to run their full service intervals from new...except their M cars. Their top of the line performance vehicles all come standard with an oil change at 1200 miles (seems like a long time, but it's quite short next to their 15,000 mile intervals). Also remember that the first 4 years of maintenance is always free.

So if BMW will spend their own money to pay for a 1200 mile oil change, then there must be something to it.

 

If you buy a mower it is recommended to change the oil after the first mow for this same reason, engine break-in. Source, worked at Lowe's for way too long. Especially with those cheaper 150 hour run time motors. The first oil change will make you think the thing is broken.

 

Just metal from everything breaking in. I changed my oil at 820 miles for this reason and everyone on facebook gave me shit for it.

 

The oil pump pickup does not rest on the very bottom of the pan for that reason. So it doesn't pick up the heavy and larger particulars. They get washed out with the oil when you change it.

You ever see the oil drain plugs with the magnet on them?

 

If your worried about your oil during the engine break in period I hope you never look at your trans pan they keep a magnet to catch all the shavings... Just change your fluids when due you won't have issues

Then why don't they recommend it on all of their engines?

Follow the maintenance schedule. Break in oil changes are of no use on a normal engine like the 2GR-FKS. It is pure placebo. You have a filter and a huge sump of high quality oil to protect your engine.

I agree on both sides of this topic, if you stick to the regular maintenance schedule your truck will last a long time. If you decide to do an early oil change it`s not going to hurt anything and if it makes you feel better about taking care of your truck, just do it.

 

I run one on my '71 Westy. I'm pretty amazed at the amount of shrapnel that sticks to it, but then again it has a screen-no filter. Tons of crap in the oil at every change. Runs like a sewing machine and is 45 years old.

I'll let the dealer do my oil changes on schedule...I'm not concerned.

 

My first few oil changes are free. That's the least they can do with the price of this truck. I will happily take advantage of it.
