I am looking to pull the trigger in reinforcing my tailgate. Question that I have is about which style. I want to install under oem skin. I do not haul any equipment. It is really just to save the tailgate from people sitting on it or standing on it when getting in and out. Will the flat serve this purpose?

My friend / coworker is mechanical engineer and he recommended the horizontal version...(standard version) Just be prepared that it won't fit underneath the OEM skin... I still have to tweak my tailgate to make it fit with the plastic skin. It fits fine without the OEM skin...if you read my post of this you can see the issues. Good luck... it's a nice product.

Yes, it will serve your purposes. That is the exact setup I have and my tailgate is noticeably heavier and less flimsy feeling. Pull the trigger! Mobtown Offroad makes a quality product here.

It fits under the OEM plastic skin with MINOR trimming to the plastic. There are 3 male tabs on the backside of the plastic skin that need to be snipped off, then perfect fit. The standard flat skin would serve your purpose just fine.

Just curious what your reason is for keeping the oem skin?

I kept the OEM plastic, just because I use it to hold small parts and pieces when I work off the tailgate.
The only thing I did was to drill a hole in each side for the factory rubber bump stop to go through, so I didn't have to slam the tailgate.

I prefer the look of the matching composite and factory look.

Fair enough! I was surprised at how good it looked without the OEM skin, but obviously it doesn't look as factory as the OEM will. Either way you can't go wrong with the Mobtown reinforcement skin... Great product!

I kept my oem skin for several reasons:
    • To neatly organize and separate small screws, nuts, etc..
    • Maintain oem look
    • I slide a lot of large items in and out of the bed. I was afraid I would scratch the powder coat off the skin

The powder we use is crazy durable but a heavy item with a sharp edge will scrape it off. Good news is a list dusting with satin black spray paint and you'll never know and it won't rust.

Just for the record, the powder coating on my reinforcement skin was more than adequate for daily use and abuse.

For work, I occasionally haul household appliances with sharp metal edges like washing machines and refrigerators. I even had to get a bed mat because my bed was getting gouged.
I feel a lot more confident hauling items now that I have the tailgate skin installed.

Bought a new band saw, picked it up, driving home the ratchet strap snapped and it fell over. Slammed the tailgate cap, then slid down the tailgate. Never took off the powder or even dented.

I like and will keep it in mind for the future as well as the locking storage compartment doors for the bed.

You used different fasteners than what was original. Why was that?

Also, the tailgate cap is designed to go under the OEM plastic skin and on top of the metal replacement skin. Looks like you have yours on top of the plastic skin, which means it probably doesn't fit all that well.
