I'm looking for a new desktop. I need something for internet, basic computing and that's it. No gaming, downloading or anything. I've been out of the computer loop for a while. Definitely not looking to spend over $400-$500. What should I look at?? Would Vista basic be ok?? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can buy one of the complete systems at Wal-mart for around $400, then in a few months add a few memory cards and it will be excellent.

Well, if money is an issue you don't need to upgrade right away. Just once is slows down. I can't remember the brand names sorry but the ones I saw the other day came with a flat screen monitor and all. I bought one for my sister and it seems pretty nice.

I 2nd the SAMS club purchase, they've got a lot of great PC's at great prices. But stay away from Vista home or any other home based MS. Get W7.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm looking for a pc for my stepson as well. Except I'm looking for one that he can play some games on or at least have the ability to upgrade the video card in the future. Wouldn't want to spend more than $500.

    I'll check them out!

That's pretty sweet!! I really need the whole package though with monitor and all.

I've had my Vostro for 2 years and Vista Basic. Really I haven't had one problem with it.

hunt around in dell's website, they always have good deals going on..

for a good gaming computer you want to be sure to have plenty of memory, a fast CPU, large HDD, and a good vid card...i havent messed with desktops in a long time, but back when i did, 256mb vid card did the job and then some :)

obviously, the bigger the better, but the better the more expensive ;-)

Yeah, I've always had Dell's and the one I have now is great even with Vista. Maybe they will have something good on Cyber Monday!

Wait a bit and get one with Windows 7. It's out now, and no sense starting out with a new PC and last years OS. :D

Not to mention, 7 is supposed to be faster than Vista.

Walmart or Sam's Club is good. I got my HP/Compaq from Sam's 4 years ago. I've added memory, hard drives and a video card over the years. Moved all the guts to a bigger case and bigger power supply. Gave the monitor to my mother inlaw when I got 2 more from work. Everything's still working. Just assume you'll be on your own for tech support.

Sam's has a 6-month return policy too so if you don't like it, you can take it back. Just keep the receipt.

what options do you think i would need to stream internet tv (hulu) to my TV?

I upgraded to the dual core, win 7, sound blaster, 4 gb ram, and the better video card and the price came close to the 500 mark :( it will be strictly for my tv.

Thanks. Leaning towards Dell at the moment.

So do you guys think Win 7 will be ok?? Looking for something I won't have to fool with for years to come. I really don't want to have to add memory or anything down the road if I can help it.

Yeah I know! Don't really want to get out of bed at 3am Friday morning so I'm hoping I can get a good deal on cyber monday!!

For budget gaming anything will do. The key is atleast 4gb of mem and a decent video card. best thing to do in this case is buy any ol cheapy PC. EXCEPT A NET TOP and spend a $125 on a good video card and you will be able to play just about any game or HD video.

For dell systems youre better off buying the absolute base system and ordering upgrades from newegg. you will pay much less.

Well, I think it says something when MS is acting like they're trying to get everyone to forget Vista while they push 7. And really, if 7 is already out where do you think the focus will be?

I have my work laptop dual booting XP and 7 to test for work. Only used it a couple days, but I like it. Compared to hating Vista within half an hour so take that as you wish. :D I support computers for a living and I hated Vista. The UAC popping up every f'n time I wanted to install something, make changes, etc. Windows 7 is noticeably less obnoxious about that.

If work had a 7 compatible client for our corp antivirus I'd be running it full time right now. I may boot back into it this weekend to play some more, and maybe throw AVG free on for now just in case.

Good info and your right. Def need to go with 7 if I want to keep it for years since it's the newest thing out. I just wish I could find a setup without all the bloatware!

I'd skip it and go with a dual (or quad) core! Dual cores are so much faster than single cores.
