2015 TRD Pro resale with supercharger

I have a '15 TRD Pro and am considering selling now that my job unexpectedly requires quite a bit more travel... 7 hour round-trips routinely. The MPGs just aren't cutting it!

Two questions:

Has anyone looked to sell a supercharged Taco? There is no reference to value in KBB or NADA for the option. For grins, I went to the dealership to ask what wholesale might be knowing that potential buyers would try to use the guides for reference - not surprising, their number was quite low. A friend of a wholesaler asked and found that, indeed, without a box to check off, it won't add anything to the value.

Anyone have a sense of what the market is for TRD Pros? Mine is the Inferno Red, towing package, with quite a few upgrades: supercharger, heated seats, top-end light bar under the grill, skid plate, fiberglass cap... 26k miles. Thoughts on what it might be worth? Mint condition without any dings, dents, or scratches...

How about getting a 2nd cheap beater vehicle for the commute?

 

Have you really run through the math on the mpg? What would you get in place of the truck? Gas is as cheap as its been in a long time, even premium. Lifestyle without the truck?

If you still owe money on the truck, you may take a hit.

Why aren't you getting mileage for driving your truck for work? I think even the IRS mandates you get credit even if your employer doesn't do it. If you're self employed you can definitely take credit.

 

The issue is evenly about cost and comfort - 7 hour round trips aren't doing anything for my back. I just bought an '06 Volvo XC70 to commute with because it has phenomenally supportive seats and reasonably improved highway mileage - but it's now in need of more work than I want to put into it.

I'm self-employed with a business set up as a P.C., so I'm taxed either way. At 15 mpg, 30,000 miles a year, if I can get closer to 30 MPG, I'll save myself about $250/month. I'm thinking it makes more sense to switch to a second-hand older Taco pickup for my weekends and a more fuel-efficient, smaller car during the week.

It's clear to me that I'll lose something - a grand or two is manageable compared to the $15k loss the dealership quoted. They claim it's because of the release of the 2016s. I think it's because they have 20 used Tacos... especially given that cars.com shows them retailing around $40k without a supercharger.

 

Hey brother, it's going to be tough to pull out a 'win' here. The time old adage of 'mods don't increase value' is really highlighted here. Not that the supercharger totally doesn't add value, but you're going to get reamed getting rid of it this early.

My advise would be to get a cheaper older gas-efficient vehicle and mix that in with driving your truck to lessen the hit of the gas prices.

 

The frustration to me is, it's a genuine, factory part/option... unlike "winch" and "fiberglass cap" and "roll bar," which add to the resale according to the guides. I get that my Firestone airbags don't add to the value of the truck - or even the Rigid Industries LED light bar - but the supercharger really ought to. Don't ya' think??

 

For that color and the discontinued super charger, I would think this would be a sought after truck on the private party seller side.

 

Have you considered taking off your upgrades and selling those separately.

It will take a little more time but in the end I think you'd gain more from it.

 

It will be sought after to the right buyer, but on paper probably won't add value. Some buyers will actually be turned off by the idea of the SC.

 

I would try to go private party sale. Bench mark off a dealer lot for an excellent shape used 2015(no s/c) and advertise adult owned factory supercharged. That is the "hook" that will sell your truck and bring you the most amount of $$.

I would also second that you look into a throw away car- a used Malibu comes to mind. Those things cruise comfortably, cheap to purchase, great highway mileage(35 ish). Double decline depreciate against your business income and replace in three years. I think that will give the best financial advantage.

 

Yeah - I'll take off the lights. The airbags aren't worth the effort. Certainly not planning to take off the supercharger, though...

Again, am I missing something? I get that "mods" don't add value - but factory GPS, factory exhaust, factory suspension upgrades do. Apparently, even aftermarket items like "winch" and "fiberglass cap." I'm just scratching my head why isn't there a provision for the Toyota supercharger??

Yep. Supercharger = Abuse, in the mind of most buyers.

 

Because the average Joe would see SC on the list of add-ons and keep walking. I would.

 

A supercharged Pro is not something you want to sell. Park it during the week, drive it on the weekends. It will be an icon in 10-15 years. Get a beater Corolla or something for work. No brainer

 

This is it for me, and probably what the dealer is thinking. If I see a truck with an aftermarket SC, I'm going to steer away. I know it's attractive to some, but to me it says that someone wanted to run this truck hard, and I'll just look elsewhere.

If you're set on selling it, as others have said, try private market, but it might take you a while to find a kid with the money to spend on it.

I maintain my recommendation of buying another cheaper commuter car and keeping the truck around, though.

 

I can completely understand not wanting to drive a Tacoma for long trips when compared to other cars.

The supercharger adds zero value unless you find someone that wants one. Your only choice is to sell it private to not take a huge dump.

Also, its important to note, if you are traveling 30K a year and lets say gas is $2.25, the difference between the truck at 15mpg and a car that gets 25mpg is $150 a month. So if you take a 3K hit on selling the Tacoma ( which is best case scenario to be honest) your break even is nearly 20 months.

 

Who says it adds value, a website! Take all those websites that value automobiles with a grain of salt, they arent worth shit when it comes to the actual amount of money you get come resale, trade in or private sale.

 

Its a mass produced midlevel truck (albeit an awesome one at that) but an icon that's a stretch at the very best.
