Hey guys...new to the forum so be patient with me. I've heard of the Grey wire mod for the rear diff locker but haven't seen/heard of anyone doing it on a newer 2nd Gen tacoma (2015). Thought of doing this mod but since there werent any post on it for the newer tacomas, I was kind of hesitant. Any info out there??

The rear locker on a 2015 is not a locking differential, but rather an open differential that uses an electronic system of the brakes to simulate a limited slip differential. I think this mod applies to 2008 and older models, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, so do I. It still is an open differential with an electronic mechanism that uses the brakes to simulate a limited slip differential. It really is an open differential system modulated by traction control. Toyota’s system measures wheel speed electronically, applies the brakes to the wheel that’s spinning faster, and then the open differential does a better job of sending power to the wheel with traction. I works similar to a limited slip or locker, but it really isn't one.

So how is that different from a trd sport with an electronic open diff. Because that's what mine does. That's a scam if it really isn't a mechanical locker

Just got off the phone with a dealer. He didn't have the answer for this question but after putting me on hold for 5 minutes he came back and said its electronic and not mechanical.

Lot's of bad info in your thread already. I too have Toyota e-locker. I've thought about doing this mod for my truck, but let me tell you... In 6+ years of wheeling my truck, I've never once wished I could lock the diff while in 2WD or 4HI. If the terrain is technical, then it's gonna be 4LO territory, and locker is readily available in that mode.

    Just sharing my experience.

If you do go through with the mod on your truck, do share your experience with it.

    And welcome to TW.

I guess that works. You probably know this, there is a more direct approach for disabling all traction systems, with the ABS disable mod.

ABS Kill Switch mod for 05+ Offroad EASY WAY! (PICS)

Super simple, does exactly what it's supposed to do and nothing more.

cmon.... 2HI rear locked makes drifting and general hooning in the desert / off road a blast.

I have had it to where i could get through flexy sections of a trail much easier in 2wd rear locked than other trucks in 4wd with open diffs.

But i will agree i dont often find myself needing to lock in 2wd / 4HI....

I will say though i use my abs off on the fly switch ALL the time.

    I have both mods,

The one wire diff lock (which will throw a check engine light if used over a certian speed - not a big deal but its a pain cus then you gotta clear it)

and the full traction control off on the fly.

The full TC off on the fly is awesome, like stated i use it ALL the time on and off road.

Never heard of the one wire diff lock. The ABS disable mod I linked to earlier, is 100% clean, no CEL, or other unwanted issues.

Auto LSD and locker are 2 completely different systems on the truck. The TRD offroad comes with a mechanical locking rear differential. Youll see the rear locker button in your truck if you have the offroad. IT IS MECHANICAL.

The auto LSD is the breaking system that stops the slipping tire to send power to the non slipping tire. That's the button with the squiggly lines that says OFF. This is the ELECTRONIC system.

2 buttons, 2 seperate systems. Dealers will tell you it comes with a flux capacitor. They're about as knowledgable about these trucks as an unborn kitten.

yup the one wire abs / trac disable mod is flawless, never had an issue... only issue with the one wire diff lock is a thrown code for the front diff actuator (as it tricks the ecu into thinking its in 4lo when its not), 20 seconds to clear the code with a code reader n you are done.

Some bad info in this post...

2005-2008 TRD Sport - Mechanical (REAL), Limited Slip Differential (LSD). Gives power to both rear tires but allows them to spin at different speeds when necessary (around corners on pavement).

2009-2015 TRD Sport - No LSD, uses the brakes to slow the slipping wheel so the other gets some traction.

2005-2015 TRD Off Road - Mechanical Locker that is engaged (RR Diff Lock) electronically by an actuator (eLocker). Locks both rear axles and forces them to both spin at the same speed at all times (no slipping).

The LSD is good for street driving while the eLocker is good for looser surfaces such as gravel, sand, deep snow (not ice), where the tires can easily slip on the driving surface when necessary. Without the LSD option the Sport seems 100% for looks now.

Not sure how you got the 2HI diff lock mod with 1 wire on a 2nd gen but I'm not familiar with the later traction control Tacomas. I had to wire in a DPDT relay behind the glovebox to use the locker in 2HI. I have no traction control/Atrac on my '07 TRD OR and I am glad. The ABS is bad enough.

2009-2015 TRD OR has the brake actuated lsd which is FAR better than the SPORT or SR5 due to its superior electric boosted master cylinder (capable of 2x the line pressures compared to the vacuum assisted setup on any other model)

As such there is also ATRAC available on these years and its IMPRESSIVE when its active in 4LO.... hell even the AUTO LSD in 2HI (which is the same as trac off mode in 4HI) is REAL impressive as well.
