So besides the trim and the "sport tuned" shocks, what are the real differences between the regular 4WD SR5 and the 4WD TRD Sport Tacomas? My friend said that only the TRD has a locking differential, but the website claims that all of the 4WD models have an Auto Limited Slip Differential.

And yes I've looked on Toyota's website, and a few forums. I just want to hear what you guys have to say, since you're the best Tacoma forum out there by far.

Ah thanks, this is much more helpful than the actual website.

what i cant figure out is why its pretty much the same price for sr5 and trd.....i think the trd has way more features, and the master cost list shows the invoice price 2500 higher.....but when looking at msrp on dealer sites and prices paid it seems they are almost the same.....i would love to get an sr5 for 32k-33k but its just not happening.....what are they adding to these sr5 that im missing?

For the price of the Sport, I don't see why anyone would buy one over the OR version. You just get a ton more stuff for your money with the TRD OR vs the Sport. The Sport has Hitachi Shocks (not Bilstein) and has a fake hood scoop. Other than that I'm not seeing the benefit of a "Sport" over a OR for that price. It isn't like the Sport has a Supercharger, Turbo, or some sort of high end racing suspension... Seriously it makes little sense to me.

I was close to getting the DCSB 4x4 SR5 because I think a lot of the extra wheeling technology on the TRD OR is superfluous at best. You really don't "need" that stuff for anyone that knows how to wheel. But its a bells and whistles thing ...some guys just like to have all the extra gadgets and I lean toward being a "gadgets guy". Also the SR5 in test driving just felt a bit more spartan to me, the seats not "quite" as comfortable. But all in all not a huge difference there. Ride quality on the TRD OR was overall superior in my test driving experience. The sport was pretty bouncy and felt really no different to me than the SR5. I personally dont need a "sport" truck. If I wanted a sporty ride, I'd drive a car. The TRD Sport still drives like a Truck and not a sports car....just a truck with stiffer suspension.

No but seriously, the reasons i bought the Sport over the OR was because of the hood scoop. I know A LOT of people don't like it and give it crap because it is fake but IMO it adds a cosmetic enhancement that I appreciate. In addition I didn't like the chrome rear bumper on the OR nor did I care for the black plastic flares. The color matched bumper and flares on the sport are much cleaner. To each their own but you have to decide whats important for you.

Only reason to buy the sport is the AC/LB/MT

False, I have no desire for AC. and I have no need for a LB. I would have liked the MT but wife can't drive stick and she needs to be able to drive the truck in bad weather.

Toyota seems to be making a ton of Sports, that's all I see out there on the lot. Would be really curious to see their profit margin on the Sport trim vs the other trims... my bet is they're making a killing on those Sports margin-wise

I had my choice and went with the SR5 4x4. All of the bells, half the whistles...but close to the same price (with the Texas Edition)
Oh, and it looks better than rest. :quickdraw:

I asked myself, would I be spending time a lot of time playing off road or for the most part running around the country on paved roads. Answer was paved roads. I wanted the LB and stiffer shocks the Sport comes with. Answer was the TRD Sport LBDC 4x4 with the upgrade package, Our trucks come with the trailer option installed. Perfect for me. 4x4 is useful in the winter and gets me to some of my fishing holes whre 4x2 would leave me stranded.

The sport model is very popular along with the off road models.

I think the look of the sport wheels and the decal on the rear of the truck bed makes it cooler.

I would buy the SR5 and be happy. =)

Yep, that's why the sport is the most featured Tacoma in the brochure as well as the commercials. For the same price as the Off Road you get nothing but fluff(no offense to the guys that like the sports) Can't stand the fake hood scoop. My Ram was a Sport with the optional Sport Performance Hood complete with fake scoops but at least the Ram had some Hemi power to back up the look lol

One downside I guess of the OR package...more stuff to break down the road once warranty expires...

But how cool would it be if someone designed an aftermarket intake that ran up into the scoop?

The sport gets better gas mileage because of the suspension config and front spoiler. I could be mistaken about this but I thought I also heard on TW that the scope was functional and contributed to the mileage?

That being said I completely agree with your second paragraph and unless a sport was available with a significant price difference I'll be getting an OR when the time comes.

How is everyone saying you get so much more with the OR. Literally everything is exactly the same except the OR get:
    -chrome rear bumper
    - plastic fender flares
    -Multi-Terrain select
    -crawl control
    -Locking rear differential.
-16 inch rims instead of 17
    -Billstein shocks

It is $2,435 (7.7% increase) to upgrade to the OR from the Sport.

Now lets look at what the Sport gets you
-hood scoop (yes its fake but lets not deny it does give a little flair to the hood)
    -color matched fenders
    -color matched bumpers
-a stiffer suspension thats more tuned for high speeds but COULD still do light trails
-sunglass holder (not too many people ACTUALLY care about this but it's still there)
    -17 inch rims

So now that we have broken down the differences and the price. Let's relate to real world use. Any true off-road enthusiast is going to replace the suspension and the rims. That could easily cost $5000. Depending on the how enthusiastic you are, you could replace the bumpers costing $3000. So lets subtract the bumpers suspension and rims and what are we left with?

    OR:
    -multi-terrain
    -crawl control
    -locking diff.
    -plastic fenders

So.. The real question is: Do these remaining features warrant $2,435.

Unless your going to Mohab or something and doing some hardcore shit, it makes more sense to me to save the money, lose the hardcore shit and get a truck that is more appearance focused but still capable of doing the same stuff as the OR with the right mods.
