Just think, when your Tacoma turns 130k miles and it still makes that noise, you'll look back on this post and laugh.

The sound most of are talking about is not the normal taco tick it's piston slap until the engine is at operating temperature. piston slap is not good in any engine.I have owned 4 other Toyotas with the 4.0 none had piston slap my 2015 tacoma @200 miles has horrible piston slap .no Qc?

go back to the OP and listen to the video, about 10 seconds in you can hear the whine. Any piston slap is people getting side tracked.

I'm not concerned with the taco tick, and not trying to create any panic ! My personal reason for finding out if this noise is a problem are #1 it sounds like metal on metal. #2 it's taken me 43 years to be able to buy a vehicle that I know has been maintained like I want, example .
Oil changed @ 500 @ 1500 if I can stop myself from changing it by 5000 ill be shocked! Mobil 1 5w30 @ 3100 now. If I'm going to waste countless man hrs , and dollars over doing maintenance just to have it fail after warranty is up , I might as well just bought a used vehicle . TRUST ME I hope it will last 300,000 like this ? If you had this noise and spend 30+ thousand you'd be suspicious to. And just one more thought , I got taco knowing it had no heated mirrors, power seats, poor seating , a suspect corrosion program , at this price point BECAUSE I should hopefully get 300,000 out of it if its taken care of . If you know for a fact that even though let's say ,(wild guess )1/5 sound this way . What is the noise .

Does anybody know what the thread on oil pressure sensor is? I bought a cheap harbor freight presure tester today , but it only has 1 bspt I think is 1/8 x 28 not sure it's at home , I'm at work , don't want to open it if it won't work.
Sorry for my neg attitude , stressed out.

Yeah this is bugging me as well... spent $$$ on a brand new truck, not happy with this noise. It does sound almost metallic like metal on metal contact resonating at a high frequency. I would never suspect a bad oil pump on a new Toyota but that's the beauty of sharing info on these forums. Looking on the bright side, it runs great otherwise besides this whining noise and the loud hissing sound while shutting it off. Will it make it past 200K? Doubt I'll be keeping it long enough to find out.

    update
I have been a auto mechanic for 20 years. Now im not claiming to be a master tech ,many of those years was learning on the job
and i learn new things everyday. This noise doesn't sound normal to me in anyway. Now people wont notice this noise if they jump in fire it up put in gear and go ,you just wont. I only noticed one day when it was a cooler mourning. I let motor warm. Park, no load 1500rpm . At that point it was very low millage like 200-300 miles and it was loud like in some of the videos , ill admit i just stuck my head in the ground and ignored it because i don't need any extra problems right now. I did quickly listen to it and thought it trans pump building pressure ,didn't pull front shield and listen to front of motor. I've been modding seats and fighting noisy door seals so i just ignored goat whine. Changed oil @500,@1500, @approx 3200 after reading this and other threads pertaining to this i pulled my head partially out of sand ,but @ this point my goat whine is probably 50-60% quieter. using a stethoscope and really paying attention i agree that it seems like oil pump or least loudest in oil pump area. i have yet to bring this to Toyota attention because 1 i don't want my new motor torn apart by someone who could give 2 shits to the longevity of my motor and if the wrong person starts cleaning aluminum surfaces with the wrong methods then hello leaks and problems!#2 i m sure that normal is the main response.
This is the update part SORRY 4 book.
checked oil pressure today with a mechanical gauge .
COLD ENGINE OFF for 10 hrs.
SHOT TO A STEADY 72 PSI INSTANTANEOUSLY , VERY SLOWLY DROPPED TO 24 PSI AFTER APPROX 10 MIN . PRESSURE WAS ROCK STEADY (not erratic) AND FELL AS TEMP WARMED . If oil pump is at fault i cant see it via a pressure test. ill keep you all updated as i can.

Between what look like good UOAs and this, I'm feeling pretty good about this. Not to be a broken record, but I'll say it again: No one seems to have any engine *problems/failures* related to the whine so far, and second, maybe it's just loud and obnoxious without being an actual problem. We'll keep watching, but if the pressure looks good like that, I'm satisfied.

I'm just throwing it out there.... my 2013 AC did this. My 2013 DCSB does this and so far I'm at 45,000 miles without an issue. I'm not saying it wont' cause one eventually... but it's likely you're going to lose the frame to rust before the 4.0L dies.

This is by no means a suggestion or confirmation of a fix, but I haven't heard this noise since I started using 5w-40 Rotella T6. This oil has a bit of a cult following because it's pretty awesome for anti-wear additives and detergents. It keeps things looking CLEAN... I'm not sure if that's actually good though considering there have been reports that the high zinc content has been killing catalytic converters. Being that I'm in MI and we don't have any mandatory emissions testing I don't really care enough to not use it. So far though I haven't heard this noise, I'll certainly be reporting back if I do... But with the way this winter is looking I don't think it's going to get cold enough for us to experience it until mid January lol

I'd love to see a UOA on the T6. If I wasn't so scared about warranty issues, I'd be all over it.
