    It saves gas.

Turn on etc it you don't want it to behave like this.

I don't understand some of the mpg numbers I'm seeing other people get. Going 75-80 on the highway I'm still getting around 20. With a light foot and cruise control I've gotten 24. Best trip average has been 30mpg and best tank average has been around 23 mpg. I consider that decent for a vehicle of this size. During the first 300 miles I was getting a lot less. Maybe some trucks take longer to break in:notsure:

It's all about where we all drive. I burn way more going in and gain it on the way home because of tail winds. I live in an area where it's flat. As well, temp changes make a difference. So if it's colder you will burn more fuel vs warmer.

My DC TRD offroad is getting between 15.6-18.9 mpg with ect on highway driving at 75-80mph head wind kills the mileage. I have 1750 miles on her as of today. The transmission does shift more then I'm used to. My first Toyota Traded in a 2008 Nissan Frontier nissmo 4x4, I was getting about 9mpg with 275/55r20 tera grapplers. So it's is a improvement for me

My appointment at dealer is the Monday after thanksgiving... The service call was generated from my call to corporate. The more info I can accumulate to describe how these things are acting would be great.
I will have to say this I believe sometimes it appears to drive completely normal and then at other times it shifts early lugs and always feels like you're in the wrong gear. I have two thousand miles on it and I am averaging mid to upper 19 miles to the gallon around town and I have gotten almost 21 miles to the gallon is the best so far.. I think the vehicle switching between direct injection and port injection causes some of these issues that's just an opinion...

The shifting was a cause of concern for me in the beginning. I quickly put 1,300 miles in 3 weeks on my SR5 and the shifting is extremely smooth now. Its either I adjusted to the tranny or the tranny adjusted to me. I don't know. But it is nowhere like it was in the first 500 miles.

I've pushed my SR5 hard too. I got a 125 mile roundtrip commute through hills and mountains in the Bay Area and I reach speeds up to 90mph at 4am during the rat race.

This.. After about the first 750 miles it seemed to have "learned" my driving pattern and was acting a lot smoother. So it doing this surging came as a complete surprise last night.. I'm completely baffled because it's been pretty much a mix of regular in town and highway driving.. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sucks cause I've really been enjoying it too. Was looking forward to this winter for some snow driving.

My old tacoma did this once I regeared it. Turns out it was the RPM fluctuation when the AC compressor would kick on. The hesitation may be a problem though.

Mine has 5000k on it now and I hate how it shifts.. slightest grade and it's downshifting. Upshifts too fast... i cant use my cruise it shifts even worse. I hope toyota has a fix for this...traded my ecodiesel in for this. Not sure if I did the right thing

The last couple of days the truck has actually been shifting better so that leaves some optimism that something can be done about it I'm willing to bet they can take care of the early shift issue with some programming changes I don't think the cruise control downshifting on the highway they will be able to do much with the truck just does not have enough torque. I bet they will sell as many of these trucks as they can the first year and once word gets out there drivability issues the sales will drop and then they will end up putting a different engine in. Those of us that bought the first and second year models will be stuck with what we've got.. but like I said hopefully they can do some minor changes in the programming to get it acceptable..

I do think if you step on the gas, the power is there. Other than a slight lugging feeling sometimes, I have no complaints. I don't care really where it shifts or revs, it's an automatic and I'm just along for the ride.

I bet you are wrong Ben91z28. This is not an issue to be fixed, but the design and won't be changed because a few like you don't like it. It gets Toyota the EPA numbers they need.

Might sell a few more manuals though.

Do you have 4x4 or 4x2. 4x2 gets MUCH better mpg than 4x4.

They won't be changing this engine or platform for a very long time. They may improve it but don't kid yourself to thinking it will change in a couple of years.

I have said this somewhere else, but will summarize my experience here.

In the first few days, I was experiencing the same thing and getting less than 17 mpg/trip. I was babying the new truck. If you put just a bit more foot into it, it will shift a bit more deliberately (hold gears a bit longer with less hunting or early shifts - this is especially true with long on ramps). Now that I am driving it more "aggressively", it is more responsive, shifting more smoothly, and producing better mpg's (20 avg). I am feeling way less lugging from overly-ambitious supshifts. So, as other have remarked - either it is learning or I am.

I have noticed that when coasting down a hill, my truck will down shift almost as if to act like a engine break and the rpm gauge will swing all the way up to 4000. The only to get it to stop is to stand on the throttle to get it to up shift again. I've never had a vehicle do anything like this before so I find it hard to believe it's normal

Okay, I have a question. How do you get 30 for a trip average, but only 23 for a tank average? It would seem to me that a trip would involve multiple tanks of fuel, and if you averaged 30, then each tank is going to have to average around 30. Is that some of that new math I've been reading about?

You can reset the trip at the top of a hill. Coast down it and get 35 mpg. The trip down the hill was a short trip, but it was a trip and you got 35 mpg for that trip. Now on that same tank you have to go up the hill. You are no longer on the trip down hill and now your mileage begins to plummet. For your trip you got 35 mpg but overall your tank gets much less.

I think the difference you are noting reflects whether the engine is in Atkinson or Otto cycle. Atkinson is a low torque mode, and when the engine shifts into that cycle, the engine seems to lug under some conditions. As I've posted elsewhere (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-access-cab-thread.396228/page-2#post-10963295), this gives the engine a sort of 'all or nothing' quality. It takes some getting used to, but I doubt there is anything wrong with your truck.
