OEM Gas Tank Skid from TRD OR on SR5 Prerunner

Scored the oem gas tank skid awhile back to add to my SR5. Of course mine doesn't have the skid mounting points on the gas tank straps. Just thought I'd throw out some part number info for the straps if anyone was thinking of doing this on theirs. The Toyota part numbers for the straps with skid mounts are....front = 77601-04020 & rear = 77602-04020. Prices are $70 somethin for one & $80 somethin for the other from dealer.

Spectra also has them and their part number =

ST323 and shows 2 different straps but does not have seperate part numbers. Only thing I saw that differenciated the 2 was strap 1 length = 24.75" & strap 2 length = 31". The Spectra ones also say each vs. set or pr. but shows no way to order them as fr or rr or strap 1 or strap 2 or both at same time. All ebay auctions said each, not pair.

Why do this? Because I can and wanted to and then found the skid cheap in an old FS thread and why not? Break from wiring projects lately too.


EDIT - I found a set of Spectra's for $60 shipped. Finally found an auction that said 2 straps come with ST323 so I went for it. Also had verified this with local auto parts store that sells them. They verified that ST323 = 2 straps. Of course they are special order and $95. That pushed me back to online purchase to save $30. Will post up a pic or 2 once I get parts and have time to put them on the truck....................

 

Awesome looking forward to your feedback on the quality of these. I have an aftermarket steel skid that I need these for. I think it is 18lbs.

 

I also cross-checked backwards giving the dealership my VIN and had him tell me which ones came on my truck. The part numbers that came up, which are for the plain straps, were.......front = 77601-04010 & rear = 77602-04010. This also made me feel better about the numbers above being correct dealer parts with the mounting points for skid. As you can see, the only difference in them were that the plain ones end with 10 and the ones for the skid end with 20. Also, most of the ebay things and dealers were using the phrase "with OR pkg" to further designate the right ones for the skid.

 

Yeah, I just came across the oem one someone was selling in a FS thread. Think I paid like $30 for it shipped so now I am obligated to finish the project. OEM will be OK for me, not 4x4 and not much if any offroading that would require it, just a bit of road debris deterrant thing I guess....or more mod bug, lol.

 

Was just looking at fuel tank straps online again. Once you get yours installed I'm curious to find out whether it's an easy job or not. Wondering if it's best to do on an empty fuel tank?

 

Any chance you got those Fuel Tank Straps done?

 

I changed the straps on my SR5 so I could mount a skid plate. Super easy installation. I used the spectra ones from Amazon, perfect fit.

 

Cool. What's it take to change them out? I'm assuming once you take a strap off you need to support the fuel tank. Best done on a nearly empty tank perhaps? Amazon claims they don't fit my vehicle but the OP said otherwise. I've had a powder coated skid laying on my garage floor for months now that needs installed.

 

I used a piece of 2x6 on top of the floor jack. One strap at a time. 5-10 minutes tops.

 

$150 is steep, you could just drill a hole in the stock strap and weld a bolt in no?

 

On Amazon they are only @ $60-70.

 

Still, bolts are less than $5 for 4 grade 8s. Who would pay $70?

 

$5 for the bolts and hundreds of dollars for a welder.

maybe I don't understand your post then. I was just trying to save the OP money. No need to buy the offroad straps from toyota or Amazon. Much cheaper if you simply weld a 12mm bolt to the existing straps all the tacomas have. Even if you had to pay someone to weld the bolt on it would still be cheaper than to buy the straps. Hell I'd weld them on for free for anybody local, it's literally 2 minutes of work.

I used

$85 Spectra ST323 Fuel Tank Strap

Spectra ST323 straps. They are stainless instead of steel like oem and these have the mounting points for the skid. Very easy swap, just used board on jack to hold tank up each end while doing one at a time. Didn't empty tank at all, it was about 3/4 full. The rubber strips from the oem straps fit on the ST323 straps and everything fits just like oem. Just needed the 4 nuts and washers to bolt up skid.

 

Kinda, but they use a flat head small tire lug looking bolt so it doesn't stick up much and so it doesn't disturb the rubber covering between tank and strap. There is room for regular bolt I guess since the tank has a dimple in those 4 spots for clearance and you could cut hole in rubber strips for bolt heads. I went with the spectras because they are also stainless instead of just plain painted steel. I would have spent more than $70 in free time to modify the oems so that was another plus for the spectras to just bolt up and be done with no other work. Like was mentioned above, less than 1/2 hour to replace and that included searching thru bucket of hardware for nuts/washers to bolt up skid.

 

Removal = jack on one end under tank, 1 cotter pin and 1 bolt, take rubber covering from one being removed and place on new strap, repeat same for other strap. Install = put pin and bolt back in.
