I'm researching for future wheel/tire options and came across this. The debate is always comical.

Of course the manufacturer determined the most cost effective and reliable option. Thats not really a debate. I find it funny when people chastise or say "leave it stock or you'll have problems."

If modifying truly caused so many issues as the OEM crowd claims, it really wouldn't be such a flourishing industry. People would realize modifying actually costs them tons in repairs, and wouldn't want to do it.

Sometimes OEM is junk and sometimes it not. I honestly attribute wheel bearings to luck of the draw on any vehicle. They are a fairly simple part and have a decent shot at failing ANY TIME. Just like many parts on a car.

My best example comes from my GTO experiences. I've got 120k on mine.
-Modified suspension: Lowered, racing springs/shocks, poly bushings
-Aftermarket wheels with non OE offset and offset tire sizes...basically EVERYTHING different than factory

My bearings are still in perfect condition.

Meanwhile I've had buddies with 50k-70k bone stock who have replaced wheel bearings once or twice already. Its just one of those items that can go either way.

The scientific argument has its points, but guys like you who preach and preach OEM fail to miss several other key points.

#1) The truck is not going to self destruct every 5k miles due to aftermarket wheels. YES...it does have an impact on longevity, but it gets blown out of proportion. Its not like aftermarket wheels cost you 10k for the life of the car. Some thing will wear quicker, but its a cheap repair.

#2) PEOPLE LIKE HAVING THINGS CUSTOMIZED. Especially if the cons are minimal...such as with aftermarket wheels.

#3) Fuctionality. Yes...on average wheel bearings will last longer if everything is left OEM. But everything has a function. My GTO cane with 235 tires as the OEM...they don't handle speed nearly as well as the 275's I have on it now. Just like guys lift trucks for offroading. It effects the truck but its for a purpose.

Theres a reason for modifying. That seems to be ignored the most. Whether its for off road capability or just aesthetics, people do it for a reason. So to say its a waste or causes problems just shows a complete lack of understanding...or an unwillingness to listen, to what the person is saying.

Too each their own I say, go as wide and as tall as you want or stay OE. I'm not dogging anyone for their choice. However, when the OP is obviously asking for advice on the subject you can't leave out information that is pertinent to his decision, especially if he may not be aware. That is the point of this forum. If everyone said "do what makes you feel good" without discussing the pros and cons of each setup then what's the point?

    well personally ..

    0. find a reputable store to buy rims/tires from
    1. find some rims you like
    2. discuss with your salesman if they fit or not
    3. discuss again on slight variations of how they would look on the vehicle
    4. buy
    5. drive off

if you don't have a competent salesperson, then your doing all your research on your own.

when I bought mine, the salesman explained and went thru different aspects on what would/wouldn't work.

Are the factory wheel specs for 2016 available? I haven't been able to find much. Would they be the same/similar to 2nd gen?

Answering my own question for those interested. According to the guy at Discount Tire, the offset for a 2016 TRD OR wheel is 25 (other specs are probably known, they are 16x7, 6x139.7)
