Yeah, I just bought a 2016 TRD Off Road. There is essentially no price difference between the two. I see it as a no brainier in favor of the Off Road. Personally, can't stand fake stuff, i.e. hood scoops. Plus with all the off road capability included in the Off Road model, seems a bargain. I also highly doubt there is any substantial fuel economy savings 'tween the two trucks. I do think the 17"'s look nicer on the Sport, but that's about it. YMMV and of course some folks may not need the off road tech included on the Off Road. But still....better to have and not need then need and not have.

False, I have no desire for a DC that will never get used & a SB that has the storage space of a matchbox.
My wife learned to drive a MT, if she can, anyone can. It comes down to desire or lack of!

My truth doesn't necessarily mean it is yours! Except for the MT: can't physically or won't mentally.

I see cosmetic things as wastes of money. I like the way the truck looks, but I wouldn't pay more to buy the Sport with the color match and faux sckewp

Also, I saw someone do the math for the gas prices and buying the air dam for 175 bucks means you need to drive at highway speeds for 35000 miles to break even....

I think it comes down to availability, impatience, and looks. The Sport looks, well sporty, whereas the Off Road clearly looks the part for what it was intended. My dealer had tons of Sports, but I had to order my Off Road because they get snatched up quicker. This is in my area, and may be different in other geographical areas.

Again, if you like the Sport, buy it. But don't settle for it due to current availability issues if you are leaning the other way.

Here in socal, there are Sports in almost all trims on many lots. You can find whatever you want except for maybe inferno or BBP colors. But there are zero 7568s in stock on any lots. They barely make it into allocation before they are snatched up by a deposit

Yup. My experience too. I actually had a deposit on one coming into the Port of Portland and it mysteriously vanished despite my deposit. Had to order one from Salt Lake City and my dealer had to cough up several in demand vehicles as trade, and wait a couple of weeks. My dealer tried to steer me to a Sport, but I resisted. And I'm not a patient man. I'm glad I did.

Wow I would have called the BBB and Toyota if they pulled that shit on me. They probably had some guy come in and offer 2k over invoice and they jumped on it. "Oops, the truck is gone."

Yeah, I'm sure there may have been that, or some back room favors between dealers. It's all good though. I try not to be the negative customer. Fact is the TRD Off Roads are hard to come by at this point. The one I had the deposit on was a red long bed, ended up with a short bed quicksand. Like the color better, but torn on the bed length. Coming from a 2014 Ram 2500 Megacab 4x4, so it was a bit of a shock. Still, love it. A bit of inner turmoil reading the bed length is stubbornly persistent though.

Hard to prove.. they'll just order you a new one and extend your wait.

Yup. Not worth the hassle or effort. Plus, when you are desperate to get an item that clearly is in demand, and you piss them off, well let's just say they aren't having any issues selling this particular model of truck and leave it at that. I'm happy, they got a sale. All is well.

Maybe the Sport with the air dam, and maybe the tonneau...
Have higher rated MPG's then the other models.
So, ToMoCo builds more of them to meet the CAFE requirement. :notsure:

Maybe. But I am unsure how they can charge basically the same price. I'd bet the profit margin on the Sport is higher.

There is probably not much differance in manufacturing cost.

True. Probably minimal. But my understanding, could be mistaken, that the Off Road has a beefier rear axle, definitely has upgraded shocks, tires are probably more expensive, and the tech behind crawl control and whatnot. Seems like there's more manufacturing cost associated with it. But who knows.

My guess is profit is a percentage of revenue and not model specific.

Yes. Much like Apple, I'm sure Toyota enjoys higher then average profit margins. Pretty similar business philosophy.

Same rear axle. Just a different diff and a locker actuator. Shocks can't cost that much more. Once they have the code written, it's theirs.
