740 mile trip coming up. Just put 2K on the truck. I'll report back how it handled towing the beast.

Get ready for a whole lot of shifting up and down. I just pulled my polaris ranger on a double axle trailer 100 mile and my truck wouldn't pick a gear. Truck seems to have the power but the trans shift points suck. I bet mine was at 5k rpm for half my trip. I'll be using my dmax next hunting trip

Just over 3K. On big hills it shifts up to 4K rpms, then stays between 2000-3500 otherwise

With bumper + winch + whatever else is added that will be over 4000lbs. Stock is ~3800lbs.

I hope the OP has some sort of trailer brake setup.
    (heh, dang strikethrough tag)

I stand corrected by the OP.

You're closer to the right weight than I was. Didn't account for bigger axles, bigger tires, winch/bumper, and bigger engine. Over 4K.

Did you try putting it in manual mode and leaving it in one gear?

I tow my crawler a lot, never any problems with the tranny trying to pick a gear. And more often then not I have it on cruise control set at 55. But maybe my 4.56 gears and 35's make the perfect combo for towing, or maybe a 2nd Gen tows better....

Probably your gearing. So far, not bad. Averaging about 70-75mph, rpms settled between 2500-3500

Toyota needs to make more Manual Trucks. Won't have to be worry about gears.

As long as you don't act like you're driving a Porsche and you have good situational awareness, it's a good manageable speed.

Great information so far, if you don't mind me asking, how many passes are you going over? I'm in the LA area and was kicking around the idea of getting a light travel trailer to tow to the desert and throwing dirt bikes in the back of the truck. I'm looking for a trailer under 3600 pounds loaded, so with dirt bikes, gear and fuel for 2 I could be in the 4-4200 pound range. That's a good ton under the tow rating, but I have to worry about going up the Cajon Pass going towards Barstow.

I'm not too concerned about mileage, but if the truck seems like it's going to blow a gasket, I can put off the trailer until I eventually go full size.

Heh, I did a cross country PCS towing this. Going 70-80mph. With a gross weight of about 3.5k lbs in the trailer.

Just went over 1 pass. Truck was trying to find its gear, rpms ranged from 3500-4500 through the pass, but settled down afterwards. Truck actually performed as well as I expected. No better or worse than my 2011 long bed which did the same task years earlier.
