Basically a huge weldable heim joint. People use them either as the leaf bushing (Alcan calls them orbit eyes) and some use them as the upper shackle mount and weld them to the frame.

What a great build!! Wouldn't change a thing. Curious where this outing was at, Uintas?

    That seems sketchy as hell...

They're pretty stout and generally regarded as having decent road manners. There are a few members on here with Alcan leafs that have orbit eyes. I think @Lumpskie has them still and plenty of people on pirate have the creeper style ones. I don't think they are much more sketchy than one side of your rear end of the truck being supported on three bolts and a swinging shackle that only makes contact through rubber.

I do however agree with you that the snap ring style ones are sorta sketchy (although plenty of important car parts are heldbin with them). I prefer the trail-gear and LROR style that use two pieces of delrin as bushings and a huge threaded collett to hold everything in.

I'm not, anything can seem sketchy depending on how its worded. That was the point of my sentance. I in no way think the current OEM method is sketchy, just like I don't find the orbit eyes and creepers sketchy either.

Break your kneecap and you'll get some good stuff too. Haha. I am starting to get to the point where I don't need them as often though, so that's good.

LOL, if you want sketchy... I've got sketchy. I present to you "pivot blocks"

This is BigMike's truck from the Marlin Crawler forums, but I'm pretty sure he gave up on this idea. It gave him tons of flex but he had multiple failures that required him to weld them while on the trail. He eventually had the creator of these build ones with a bigger collar but even those warped or something like that.

Also I apologize to @Cohbsteq for derailing his build thread :threadjacked:

Ouch, that blows. I've never broken anything like that, must be super painful.

Worst pain I've ever felt by miles. I nearly passed out from pain in the ER. From the waist up was numb and tingly, I was shaking uncontrollably (which just caused more pain), and was hyperventilating.

You should really read some of BigMike's three build threads. He has some pretty unique stuff being the son of the legendary Marlin himself.
