What is with the upgraded shocks? They are softer than the Sports in order to absorb bumps and bruises when off road. I am not at all sure they are any "better", just designed for a different purpose. One advantage of the Sport is, it has stiffer shocks which would assist the truck when carrying a load in the back. Cornering at speed would be a touch more firmer as well. Not sure the rear axle is any beefer either and as far as the tires are concerned we get an all terrain tire up here. I have no idea if it is rated any different than those on the OR. I believe the Sport has a limited skip diff vs the locker on the OR. If it has, both work and are designed for two different applications.

Both trucks provide the consumer with a choice based upon what they want to do with the truck.

Yep. Said as much and agree with you. Choice is good. I have been corrected on the axle, I was wrong on that. They apparently have the same axle. Personally, I have never really wrapped my mind around the concept of a sport truck. Seems an oxymoron. I wonder what the real world on road performance differences would be between the two trim lines. Regardless, I'm sure there are plenty of folks who would disagree with me, and are running around in their sport trucks, and that's cool. You gots yours and I gots mine.

I still feel there is more tech, and therefore costs, associated with building an Off Road model. Am I wrong? Maybe. If I am, certainly wouldn't be the first time.

    Glad you enjoy your truck.

Shocks don't do anything for load unless you are traveling the suspension with a heavier load. Ride height is all in the springs.

Maybe I should say 'ride height should be all in the springs'

Good thing they have the same springs. You are correct of course. Stiffer shocks do help out though when carrying a heavy load and you hit a bump.

People keep saying " you don't need lockers ". Well you don't, until you do. I've been saved several times by having lockers. I wouldn't have it any other way now.

What you say is true but I am willing to bet 95% of Tacomas never go Off Road to any great extent. Running around on what amounts to gravel roads in my mind is nothing more than an off pavement excursion where fording the odd mud puddle would be about it.

I got extremely lucky with my 2016 DCSB Blazing Blue Pearl TRD Off Road 4x4 V6 AT. I was surprised on my pick up day with a COLOR MATCHED REAR BUMPER. I didn't even get the premium package (BSM, Sun Roof, Dual Auto Climate Control, etc). I like the look of a matching colored rear bumper much more than the standard chrome bumper on the TRD Off Roads. I don't know how I managed to get my truck like this, but I'm very happy with it. Oh, and I went to the dealer on a friday, and picked it up on a tuesday. Apparently, someone who ordered my truck canceled last minute, and I bought it with 5 miles on the odometer. Score.

No you were mostly right about the rear end. All offroads have the 8.75 rear while everything else receives the carry over 8 inch EXCEPT the 6 speed manual Sport

Wow, you did get lucky as the color matched rear bumper was really the only thing I wanted from the premium pkg so I couldn't justify spending that much more just for that. Congrats and great looking truck!

Ugggh - Hawaii makes you put your inspection stickers on the bumper? That freakin sucks - especially for cars with painted bumpers (like all of them now)

I see. Thanks for the correction. Guess folks better research heavily before buying a Tacoma, if such things matters to them. I can say my dealer was clueless about almost everything regarding the '16. Still argued with me it still had a 4.0 liter six in it, even with the sticker clearly saying otherwise and me telling them as much.

One limiting factor in all of this for those of us who live above the 49th is the Off Road only comes in an Access Cab LB version. The OR is not an option for those of us who want the DC and/or the LB. In any event the TRD Sport will suffice for anything I am apt to require out of a truck which might be why Toyota Canada configures the Canadian trucks the way they do. Build and sell what sells in the market you are selling into.
We do get the trailer package installed on all our trucks and I would be curious to know if that includes the anti sway bar. No mention of it on the Toyota Canada website either as a feature or as an iption that I could find.

Well that's just weird. Seems Canada would be an excellent market to sell all manners of the Off Road trim. Seems odd Toyota wouldn't exploit that to its logical limit and flood as many OR's into the market as possible. I'm sure they'd sell them all. No DC OR? Bizarre.
