Hey guys. Im having a tough decision....I've only had my 2015 tacoma for about 2 months now. I was getting the 5000 mile service yesterday and made the mistake of looking at the 2016 while my truck was being serviced....The salesman has almost got me convinced to trade my truck in on the 2016. While it is very nice...I would have negative equity since I just bought my 2015. With this being the case, I would be trading my 2015 4 door in on a 2016 access cab. What ya'll think?

Negative equity. IMO, don't do it. The 3rd gens will be around for a while, there's no rush to pick one up now. I've had my dealership call me 3 times since the 2016s came out asking if I could trade in my 2014 because customers are looking for used Tacomas (I'm sure it's a ploy). They offer to keep my payments the same, but I'm not willing to start my loan over again.

    Tough one there.

You got kiddos, if you do, stick with the DC.

The 2016's are nice thats for sure but are they nice enough to jump from a one year old truck , take on debt, and lose those two ever so handy extra full sized doors....that's all up to you.

dont do it unless you can come out even or ahead....and plus if you did do it, better make sure you can live with going from DC to AC!

Do what you feel is right, if you can handle the negative equity, go for it. Densest make financial cents, but if you can live with it go for it. Just make sure to get GAP insurance on the new note. I did something very similar when I traded in my 14 DCLB 2wd, for a 15 access cab 4wd trd OR. I am 100% fine with the AC, as its just me 99% of the time. We have a car for family crap.

You have plenty of time to wait, as the 3rd gens aren't going anywhere. I would atleast wait until the 2017 comes out with updates. Imagine how you'll feel when you spend that money and youre upside down, and an updated version of the new truck comes out.

It won't take long to get your loan in line with what the trucks worth. These trucks really hold their value. I know with mine in about 5 or 6 months the worth was more than the loan.

Not sure why you would want to spend money to downgrade for a smaller and uglier model.

"New" design or not, sounds like you were dealing with a damn good salesman hitting you where it hurts.

At the very least wait until the 2017's come out that have all of the 2016 bugs corrected.

These trucks are great for that... I've had mine 11 months and I'm already at the point where the truck is worth $4,000 more or so than what I owe... It happens really quick since they don't take a nose dive like most other vehicles I've had.

From a purely financial point of view, I don't recommend it.

Your negative equity will equal out within a year or two - this time will vary greatly based on your payment structure, but these trucks hold their value better than any truck in the business, so I feel comfortable saying that.

From an industry point of view, the first couple years ALWAYS have kinks to work out. I'd ride your truck for at least 1 year from right now, and then see how you feel.

    I do have a DCSB '15, though, so I'm bias! :)

Was in your shoes a couple weeks ago when I took my 13 in for an oil change. Looked at the 16's, salesman came over trying to sell me the truck. Told him I was just looking around while my 13 was getting an oil change. Then he started trying to get me to trade in my 13 for the 16 because they need used 2nd gens. Since that day, I've gotten a phone call, a couple emails and a letter from that dealership trying to get me to trade in. Nope. I'm good.

They always push with the "we can keep your payments the same" and leave out the "except you'll have to make an additional 22 of them" part. I'm sure they've gotten more than a few people with that, which is why they keep throwing that line out.

Also, just another thing to consider - the Chevy Colorado just took truck of the year by Motor Trend.

Not a huge deal, but the '16 isn't dominating its competition like the 2nd Gen did.

What does this translate into? It translates into the 2nd Gens are going to be in demand for years to come - your trade-in value will likely get comparatively better over the next few years.

Yea I've fallen for that line in the past. Lol. Which is why I just brush off the salesmen now unless I'm actually shopping for a new car.

    Short story time:

In July of this year I bought a 2015 SR5 PreRunner. Paid $26,600 for it brand new from the dealer. Within about 3 months, I had buyers remorse and wanted a 4x4. Dealer gave me a killer deal on the swap during which he surprisingly gave me $28,800 BACK for the Prerunner. I thought it was odd they were giving me $2,200 more in trade in credit than what I purchased the truck for but I didn't complain. 1 week later I rode by the dealership to see if they had my traded-in 2015 PreRunner on the lot. Yep, for sale with a $30,999 sticker price tag. To my bigger surprise it was gone within a week.

My bet is these dealerships are getting ridiculous margins on the 2nd gen trade ins from people who are wanting to snatch them up because they don't like the 3rd gen looks. Combine that with the fact they're talking guys into "upgrading" to the more expensive 2016's and it's a win-win recipe for the dealerships with dollar $igns in all directions.

First time I heard it my initial reaction was "Sweet! New truck!"...then the "it's too good to be true" voice took over. So I'd either be looking at a 2016 TRD Off-Road DCSB with way more payments, or a base model 4cyl, 2WD, manual everything for no additional payments.

Damn. You got a sweet deal. Sucks for the new owner of your old truck. Lol. If he only knew.

The "new car" factor was what made me fall for it before. I'm an impulse buyer and the new tech that the newer version of my old BMW had was enough to make me trade up. Not gonna lie, the new tech in the 16's kinda make me wanna trade. But I'd rather finish off my payments for my 13 then just buy a fun weekend car next.

Sounds about right. I did the same thing with a 2013 MT AC and traded it for a 2013 DCSB AT. I ended up getting more than the truck was worth and basically breaking even during the upgrade. They sold my truck for $3,000 more than I got for the trade-in less than 2 weeks later...

Personally I'm really happy to have one of the later models of the 2nd Gen line. They had 9 years to perfect my truck and work out all the major production and design kinks. It doesn't have all the newest bells and whistles but I don't think anything else is going to match it for reliability. The 2016 looks like a really nice truck but it's still the first production run of the new generation so I inherently don't trust them. But I'm of the mindset to buy a vehicle one time, drive it until the wheels fall off, put them back on, and then drive it some more. If you like trading in and having the latest and greatest then just disregard all of that.

This. I owned my 1993 for 20 years before buying a 2015. All the new tech in the 2016 will wear off in a few years, just about the time added to your new loan. I've always preferred reliability over whiz-bang. My 2015 OR is a great truck that rides nicely and has all the features I want (except for the Homelink mirror - I added that). I'm sure it will last at least as long as my '93 has. I've owned a first year BMW motorcycle and now shy away from first year anything.
