Accounting for larger tires takes you to 15.6; but, that is still awful depending on how much over 75 you were doing.

Did you accidentally bump the shifter into S-mode, or whatever it is? (It defaults to 4th.)

With cruise on? Cruise seems to be a crap shoot. It's entirely too happy to downshift, sometimes even dropping to 4th when not needed. I averaged over 1MPG worse on the same ~120mi trip using cruise vs with cruise off where I was able to keep it in 6th.

Seems most people are getting the advertised highway MPG figures if they drive conservatively. I have never had an issue meeting or exceeding EPA highway MPG if I drive in a smart way.

No objective data exists to show a significant change in MPG after break in. Could it improve? Perhaps a very small amount but I sincerely doubt it would be more than .5 MPG or even noticeable. This has been discussed multiple times on the forum. Consumers would like to believe their MPG will magically improve by 2, 3 or 4 mpg after hitting a certain mileage point but I've not seen or experienced anything to prove this theory correct. The perceived MPG improvement (if any) after "break in" seems to be more of a placebo affect or due to the driver "getting used" to driving the new vehicle over time.

Hundreds of factors can effect fuel economy. Driving style, ambient air temperature, field elevation (altitude), parasitic drag, vehicle payload, etc...

Just thought I'd throw an update out there. Sitting at close to 4k miles now. Mileage really tends to be best at 55-65 sweet spot. Anything over or below tends to drop off pretty sharply.

My morning drive is a busy highway so sometimes it is swell and 70-80mph for 18 miles, sometimes it is stop and go. Occasionally it lands right around 55-65. I notice that when it stop and go or 70-80 I get 19-21mpg. When it is 55-65 with some stop and go I can 25, almost 26 mpg!

I also think we just switched to winter fuel where I live because I have seen pretty noticeable mpg loss the last two tanks.

Picked up my V6 auto access cab with 4x4 off-road package on Monday.
On second tank and tank average is 14.3 right now.
I drive in Idaho where speed limit is 80 mph.
Driving has been 95% freeway 5% town. Cruise is set at 80, Have tried ect both on and off.
It has been windy, but this seems really low. My rav 4 gets 24.5 under same condition.
    Any ideas?

Last week I drove nonstop from Phoenix to Vegas on one tank of gas and got 14.6 mpg on that tank. It's a V6 Access Cab 4X4 that is bone stock except for window tint. I'm close to 5K total mileage.

Speed kills mileage. You want to go fast you pay. It takes so much energy to move so much mass at speed. Simple.

Fuelly is only tracking a small number of 2016s now but the numbers are very close on all of the trucks. It looks to me like Toyota over-promised and under delivered with the 3.5L in terms of fuel economy for performance...

No, the EPA is giving numbers that most people cannot match with their high speed driving

Most speed limits are 65+ on interstates and highways in AZ. If you plan to move with the flow of traffic you need to be moving at 70 to 80mph

3rd Gen drivers are driving the same speeds they were in a 2nd Gen Tacomas and the fuel economy has not increased significantly. EPA may be culpable for some of the blame but the engineers at Toyota made the design choice to use the engine.

It's the 80mph that is hurting you.

You can baby the gas pedal it like the rest of the princess's on here getting 20+ or just deal with the fact that you got a truck that gets 16-18 combined.

Next week I am driving from Tucson to Vegas (luckily just passing through that hell hole on the way to Utah) going through PHX. I have the same truck. I'd be very surprised if my MPG was less than 20mpg for that same trip.
