Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

Awesome. Thanks. Just realized my dad borrowed my torque wrench. Do i need that or can I just tighten by hand until it feels good and tight ?

 

I personally have never been "good" at the whole hand tight thing so when it comes to my truck I always use the the torque wrench. Truthfully you may want to get advice on that from a more experienced member. But I can only assume it would be fine as long as you do NOT over tighten it.

 

Same here. Think of this like the engine oil drain plug. You don't want to go to tight.
Rear is 37 ft/lbs so how about you snug it up and then go back and finish the job when you get the torque wrench back.

After i did mine I cleaned the whole area so I could then easily tell if it was leaking. And when i got home from work that evening i put a piece of cardboard underneath the rear diff to check as well since the oil would have been warm and more prone to leaking if it was going to.

Only had 2000 mile on mine when I changed it. Was actually getting dark even then and you could see that the oil had a metalic sheen from the break in wear. Did the transfer case as well. Will probably wait till the spring to do the front diff since the only time it will see any use is this winter.

And just for clarification, you have Auto LSD just like my 2015. Its not mechanical (that would be a real LSD), its electronic. It uses the ABS system in reverse to brake the wheel that is slipping and thus transfer power to the other.

 

Ok great. I'll swing by the store grab another wrench. A cheap one. Then charge pops for the trouble. Lol.

Myself I would have preferred if it came with torsen (truetrac?) diffs. no switches, no clutches.

 

I having actually been looking at a Truetrac but I am on the fence. It would be nice to have it when I tow my trailer through snow covered dirt roads but I can't find anyone I would trust installing it.

 

Just curious how many of you guys check your differential fluid levels at each oil change interval and do you ever see that it needs to be topped off? I changed my fluid 6k miles ago and I never looked during my last oil change. I haven't seen any evidence of leaks.

Hey, I'm getting ready to do my front, transfer case, and rear diff. 2010 4 wheel drive, what is the total amount of

$26 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 I will need?

 

I think 6 qts it the right number, was tallying up fluids the other day myself to do this.

 

And, if I understood the directions correctly...I fill up the fill hole until it starts to drain, then plug it, let it drain into the rest of the compartment, unplug it and then fill it until it starts to drain again, then recap it for real.

 

I believe that's correct. I haven't don it yet, ran trough the thread once. Will read it again b4 I do it.

06 Taco Sport 2WD 200,000 miles no records of the diff ever being done and it chatters
bumping into 5th gear pretty bad - My INDY is doing the job tomorrow -

Mobil1 is what he got for my diff plus the Valvoline additive -

Im reading that Mobil1 will make it chatter more and Royal Purp might be better
- for whats its worth can anyone just tell me

Best is whatever brand of oil you prefer. I use lucas dino gear oil. No issues, no chatter.
