I failed my motorcycle written test on a question of braking in the rain. I fishtailed by using both brakes once. Didn't dump, but learned me a lesson!

 

Dumb question, I've always rode sport bikes...do the rear tires on a heavy bagger tend to lock up easier due to the added weight and different tire footprint?
I've seen a few bike wrecks and a factor in the crashes was a heavy cruiser/bagger locking the rear tire

 

Even on a sport bike it is far easier to lock the rear tire than the front. I could ride 90% of race pace with just the front brake (well, until it fades), and most of the time only use my rear brake around town (like rolling up to a stop light). The problem is hogs don't have enough front brake for their weight. You can jam on the front brake hard at speed and very little happens other than some nose dive. Hogs are really, really dangerous even in stock trim and most accelerate much faster than they stop. This is especially true if you are used to riding a performance oriented bike and take a cruiser for a rip. I almost aced it the first time I rode one, because I didn't realize the brakes are about as effective as down shifting. That doesn't mean you can't ride one safely, but you have to increase your following distance and always be looking for escape routes. I don't understand why someone would want to ride a 900 pound bike with 80HP and bad brakes these days, who knows, maybe I'm missing out on the thrill of almost dying every ride.

That's exactly why my dad's 115HP Ultra Glide is now a trike. It stops quick, it's stable, and for a man now in his 70s the only way mom will let him ride.
