I checked out this forum to gain knowledge from other owners and I find comments like this amusing.
There is a bit of status and pride that goes with purchasing a Tacoma. I am past the stage of being the first off the light and fastest on the highway. However, it is down right humiliating to hang out in the slow lane at 70. The speed limit is 70 for semi's.

Should be able to ask a question, and not be accused of complaining.

What other question is there? You know why your mpg is low. Maybe install another air dam, Tonneau Cover, fine wax coat?

I am averaging just under 16, mostly in town. Not nearly what I thought I'd get. Just over 4 mpg better then my 2014 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 V8. I'm hopeful it will get better.

I have just over 450 miles on my 2WD DCSB, most of which is "toolin' around town" miles and I'm getting around 16 or 17 MPG, which is kinda what I expected since most of my driving is in traffic with many, many stop lights/signs. Seems that all we do here is wait on traffic signals to turn green!

I'm hoping to get out and put some miles on it today, away from Cowtown, just to see what it'll do.

I decided to take my Tacoma on a "long" drive around the island of O'ahu today. I drove continuously, driving up some slight elevation near Kailua and Kaneohe, Hanauma Bay and Makapu'u beach. I drove a good amount on the H1 and H2 at speeds around 55-65mph, and some city driving with stop lights and slight traffic stops here and there in downtown Honolulu, then finished my trip where I started, which is home. I pretty much drove around the entire South Eastern part of the island. The transmission was picking gears at highway speeds just fine, and the torque was there when I needed it. I was driving for a little more than an hour and a half. Had my AC on level 1 the entire time, radio on, windows up, ECT off majority of the time-only used it for mild acceleration testing from a stop light a few times (makes a noticeable difference by the way). I drove mostly in regular Drive mode, and utilized Sport shifting mode for engine breaking while coasting downhill near the beach. Here is a picture with my Trip Data from todays drive:

I noticed the same thing when driving around town. If I drive like an absolute grandma in town, I'd get about 15-18MPGs on my shorter commutes. However, If I felt like saying "fuck it" and stepped on it a little bit, my MPGs would stay about the same or increase by 1-2MPGs on the same exact routes. Rarely does it ever get worse from being slightly peppy on the gas pedal. Today I averaged 23.7MPGs on a 74.3 mile roundtrip.

There is such thing as accelerating too slow. Go 10mph or 100mph and get the same mpg...

You should find that sweet spot of acceleration and stay there. Also why people using ECT were getting better mileage because the shifting is a bit more aggressive to counteract softer acceleration.

Or, 45-55mph is the best speed for mileage on almost any vehicle. Try to get there as fast and as steadily as possible without accelerating like a racecar.

I did the same route last week and got 22.5 average on that tank of gas.
I'm starting to see more 2016's on the road.

I've only seen one other 2016 on island and it was on Hickam base, but then I saw a silver TRD Sport today near the airport.

i went to kauai on thursday and had a 2016 dcsb follow me from hawaii kai to the airport. when we parked, there was my MGM, his silver, an inferno and the new blue 2016 tacomas all parked within 12 stalls from each other. funny thing is my step kids' dad, got a black trd sport, so ive been seeing a lot around Oahu lately.

    Tank #3
Pulled a small trailer with a SxS on it thru western Idaho into Oregon and back(some hills involved). Cruise set to 65-70 and was getting a 14.5 tank average.
    This tank was non-ethanol regular.
I am scheduled with a Toyota tech on Monday for a ride along with his diagnostic equipment. Hoping to find some more torque in this motor.
Seems like using the cruise hurts mpg quite a bit. It will often down shift more abruptly with cruise on than not.
Thanks for all the info guys

Doesn't look like a big difference in mpg that I am getting on my 2006. I guess I will keep driving this one for a while. I only have 133,000 miles on it so far. I'm getting around 17 mpg with city/highway combined. If I drive 55 on the highway I can get about 20 mpg, but who does that.
