Correct. It's tight against the weatherstrip.(red)
Credit card will help tuck it in.
If you goof and have to lift make sure it's warm. If you hear a ripping sound that is the adhesive separating from the vinyl. You can reapply, but will have air bubbles.
I learned the hard way on the first one.(blue)

Jason, I just got a set of the sill protectors. (Factory) I realize they are just big "stickers" but could you explain the installation for me. I don't want to screw it up.

    Thanks

Apply them with soapy water or waterless car wash and slide them into place. easy.

Windex will not work. Make a soapy solution with dish washing soap.

So soapy solution, wet the sill area, apply sill protecter and position it where you want it, the squeegee the water out with a credit card or plastic squeegee?

    Do I have that right?

That is correct, John. Not too much soapy water though. You really only need the water up by the weather strip to make sure you slide the protector under the rubber. After that, just lay it flat down and smooth from the center out. Do the flat part first before you try to bend the overhang. Keep it warm. I used a heat gun to help the "bending". Do that from the center out also. Use something more substantial than a credit card. I had an old rubber sanding block in the shop (without the sandpaper) and used that. I did mine without using the "wet" method. I see you are in NY. The Toyota instructions say to keep the surfaces between 70-90 degrees. Definitely do it in a warm place.

All that? I just peeled off the backing, slid it up under the seal and pressed it down. No soapy water or anything like that. I'll do that for window stickers but for step tread seems like a waste of time.

Only a waste of time if you get it positioned correctly the first time. Misplace it and you'll be glad you took the extra precautions.

Same here. I had no idea it was any more complicated. Just be careful and hold it so the back edge slides up under the rubber. Lay it down from the back edge forward and roll it over the edge. I did use some denatured alcohol to clean the sill first though. Makes it stick really well.

I used rubbing alcohol swabs. My wife's a nurse, they are everywhere in the house.

I did put on a roc bloc in the tailgate and it came with alcohol swabs and something called adhesive primer. That stuff was magic for the foam tape. I hope I don't ever have to take that off.

I was very careful putting mine on with the soap mixture. But I got just a little sloppy with the last one and a few days later I noticed a few bubbles had formed. I went to the drug store and bought a thin hypodermic needle for 10 cents. I carefully pushed the needle through the vinyl on an angle until it punctured the bubbles. I withdrew the needle's plunger a little to suck the air out of the bubble and then pushed down on the vinyl while withdrawing the needle. No more bubbles and no marks on the vinyl!

Ditto--After all the smoke and fire clears, are the 2015 door sill protectors the same as the 2016 protectors?

Would someone mind measuring the length of these so I can see if the 2016's will fit my 2014? If they're entirely flat, I don't see why they wouldn't fit a 2nd gen, as long as they're not so long that they run up on the front curves.

They are exactly the same length. However, the 3rd gen sill protectors are about 1/4 inch wider so they may need to be trimmed on the inside edge or they may hang over the sill edge too far on a 2nd gen.

Make sure that there is not one speck of dirt on your door sill. One grain of sand equals a fair sized bubble. Learned the hard way. :annoyed:
