Thanks, I'll give that a try. I figure that is why Toyota puts 0W-20 in our trucks to help at start ups and short trips.

Hey, OP, I know why you really started this thread. You just wanted to brag that you have (or had, as the case may be) a GT500. It worked. I'm jealous.

Quit acting like a Jr High school girl being all dramatic, you have a lot of people fooled here thinking your "luv" for Tacoma's. You hate Tacoma's and the fact you created a account, used that user name "LuvTacos" and come here every day trolling the forums is pathetic. You are doing this either for your love of Chevy or Chevy pays you in french fries. Your life is really that miserable? Dude we get it you hate Toyota, move on.

Would installing a strong magnetic drain plug be worth the 35.00 charge? If they do any good why wouldn't every auto manufacturer install them initially? Perhaps they want engines to fail to keep the shops busy? The filter does a good enough job as long as you change your oil as recommended? My 2014 KTM Superduke 1290 has a magnetic plug from the factory.

Nope, just lucky to have a job where I can afford to play with some nice vehicles. I use to be a mechanic (I'm licensed) but that was back in the 90's. I rebuilt a lot of things back then and learned a lot.

For piece of mind I do the oil change early, and I'll change the diff fluid around 3-4K miles. The trans, coolant, and brake fluid have a much longer life.

    1. The owner's manual specifies a break-in period of 1000 miles / 1600 km. It's advisable to change the oil then.

    2. You are in Toronto. Your frame will develop rust holes well before any wear-related issues develop with the engine.

It is considered bad practice to mix engine oils from two different mfrs, because the additives might work against one another. For the same reason, I would avoid Lucas oil stabilizer.

Shouldn't oil be changed at 6 months if the mileage is not met?

Keep in mind that the magnet will not catch many of the metals that will be in there. Non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass, bronze, etc are still going to float around. The filter will catch it if it is large enough to be a problem. If it is laying in the bottom of the pan and not getting pumped anywhere, then it isn't doing any harm.

From what I got out of the service manual the first oil change 12 months or 5,000 miles. Then under certain driving conditions every 6 months or every 5,000 interval. Dealer has me on the 12 month oil change because there is no way I'll put 5,000 miles on my truck even in 3 years time.

If the magnetic poles switch your truck is the least of your worries.

 Scott knows I am messing with him. I understand what you're saying, it could come loose or some other failure and release all the bits. Since they would then be consolidated and not worn down to fine particles or deposited, yes I agree it would be bad. Kind of like releasing a bunch of criminals back into society, you could say its a one way street. No offense to anyone here who happens to be a criminal.

Yep, always change oil on a new vehicle at 500 miles. One may be VERY surprised at the amount of machining swarf and casting flash that one may find. I'll cut open oil filters to check also on the first change. On the FJC with the in block filter, there was a decent amount of casting flash. Not really impressed with Toyota's block cleaning before the engines are assembled after machining.

I don't think it really makes THAT much of a difference in engine life but I like to change the original oil early, inspect it, and document changes after that initial break in.
