Just a guess, but I think if OME made the shock longer, adjusted the valving, threads like this would cease to exist. :notsure:

Watch this guys video at 1:33. It shakes the shit outta his truck when going over a speed bump. Nobody should accept that as normal or acceptable, IMO

I drive over speed bumps every day, so shit was killing me.

You drive over some speed bumps yet? See above video. Does your install do the same?

Yes I am (886s with a steel front bumper) and I enjoy the ride. @slcsez2000 actually sold me his and has icons now, he told me he wants to go back to OME.

doesn't like how they ride. Also from what I have seen is that Icons have to be rebuilt periodically which can be a PITA

They're meant to support 100lbs of weight and provide 2" of lift though is my point

People looking to get 2" of lift with no front weight should probably go with 884's IMO

Just completed my OME install all around a couple of days ago. I chanced it and went 886s up front with no weight. Some speed bumps are ok going slow, but the pointy ones rock the crap outta the truck. I definitely agree it's the "top out" issue because I can feel the wheels roll down the back side of the bump. Almost like the tires never leave the ground, and the front of the truck gets "bucked" up.

Thinking about switching to 887s to keep the height of the 886s and get the compression of the 884s/885s. It sounds like no matter what there's gonna be some clank. Mine isn't as bad as this last video, but I also don't hit them at 10MPH.

I had the Icons cranked up a bit too much I guess to get a full 3" lift. I rode this way for a full year and the ride was pretty harsh but I got used to it honestly. I cranked em down an inch on each side last friday when I was checking for a leaking front strut (thought it was a bad seal but all was fine) and now the ride is much much smoother. I will say that I think the OME kit is the best bang for the buck and I personlly think it rides very similar to what I have now.

Yeah, I've heard that you get a really good bang for your buck. Especially over speedbumps haha

When I posted that, I had an ARB bumper with steel-line winch. Should have been plenty of weight. I'll say, though, that since I got my steel skids on, the ride is much better. Can't believe I needed all that weight for 886s, but I did. I wouldn't recommend 886s to anyone that isn't going to go hog-wild with armor.

Why I went with 5100's. Put them on and fogettaboutit!

While I'm not a shock expert your observation is baffling? If the rebound is very slow it should prevent the harsh top out issue. That usually happens when the rebound is too fast? Must be a situation where with the spring on it rebounds too fast and /or the 885 spring is overloading the shock! Which would explain why with the added weight it slows the rebound down enough to stop the top out.

You're a good guy Oz. In this thread we're just talking past each other. :) I'm talking OME shock and you're talking coil.

I like the coil. The 885 coil and 5100 shock is a great combo for me so far. But the OME shock... burn it with fire! :p

I agree. You would expect to see the opposite. It was actually so slow to expand I thought it was broken, maybe mine are? :notsure:

I understand , but the coil not being put under the anticipated compression due to lack of front weight is going to allow the shock to top out easier , you dig ?

Yes. The OME product guide states 885 coils will provide an estimated 50mm (2 inches) of lift with up to +110 lbs extra weight. That +110 lbs could come from a steel bumper.

So a double cab running 885 coils, sans extra weight, provide about 2.5" of lift. Which is what a lot of folks do around here. Agree.

To your point that with extra weight, it may help with the OME shock topping out issue. That's quite possible.

I see exactly what your saying.

It's worth mentioning that OME markets TWO DIFFERENT shocks for the Tacoma. The
    90000 and the 90021.

As I understand it the 90021 is lightly valved... That's the one I had. It's quite possible that the 90021 is garbage and everybody should buy the 900000 cause it's great. Maybe it would be better for folks who are having the speed bump problem. I don't know...

All that said, there is no way in hell I could recommend the 900021 product based on my experience.

Thank you. Thanks for contributing to my understanding. I understand the OME coil better now.

Hopefully this thread will help someone who is trying to make a decision.

I hope I don't sound too bitter. I'd settle for my $300 back. I also see no reason to comment any further on this issue from me. If anybody searches they can read and decide for themselves...

Some useful screen grabs from the ARB/OME product catalog which I referenced...

    :( :( :(

    Damn. That sucks.

My OME's had 6000 miles on them when I took them out. They looked like they had 50K miles on them.

The good news is, it's all behind me now. It took me 2.5 hours working by myself in my driveway to put in the 5100 and cost me about $170 shipped to my door. After the successful speed bump test the next day I drove it to Cleveland Nat'l Forest and got to test the suspension out on some burms which are like speed bumps but are designed to channel water off the trail. My truck did so well. I love it again!

Probably have the only 2nd Gen with an 8274 in the world.
Hey man. I'm running OME 886 coils over 5100's, got 250 lbs of winch and mount on the front, I took my sway bar off and that softened my ride noticeably. I'm in pastures, crossing small ditches and on rough oilfield roads ect so not a mall crawler FYI. I'd recommend driving the truck without the sway bar to see if it helps.
