How many trucks were buybacks for frame rust? Frame database?

Hey guys, this is my first post here, but I've been active on other forums for years. I currently have a 94 Land Cruiser and want to turn that into a cheap 98-00 Tacoma. I'm wondering if anyone has numbers for how many trucks were bought back and scrapped due to frame rust. I have been searching like a fiend but there are very few for sale on Clist or eBay. Is this due to a limited supply caused by frame buybacks or does everyone with a 1st Gen just drive it into the ground?

 

Most of them get driven into the ground. They are becoming more desirable and sought after every day, especially with the 3rd gen coming out and all.

 

Well all of the 2004 and older tacomas are made the by Japs and 100% genuine toyotas but 2005 ups are 90% Americans 10% Japs as I would say the quality have been dropped by some points for newer tacomas.
Like others been saying best gen, first gen.
I owned 2 tacos 01 and 02 will drive both to the ground or pass on to my boys.

 

Yeah, I kinda figured most people who have one want to keep it. I worked at a Toyota dealer back in high school and I remember drooling over brand new 2001 Tacomas with the wrappers still on. I shoulda bought one new when I had a chance.

If I find one to purchase I will check the VIN on the Toyota Owners Group app and see if it's had the frame recall done.

 

The Tacoma has always been built in America with some of the second gens built in Mexico, the first gens were built in Fremont, California. The Toyota Pickup/Hilux is the one you're thinking of, they've always been made in Japan.

Yeah so I hate to say it, I know you guys will disagree but I'm gonna look for a RAV4 instead. They're Japan built, and while not as rugged as a Taco I think I'll get equal if not slightly better mileage and fewer problems to worry about.

 

Depends on what year RAV4 you are looking for. They've been built in Woodstock since 2009.

 

Ex wifey had a '96 2dr Rav then we got a 4dr '97. Pretty much tupper wear. Did OK in the snow. But always felt like it was just a slight step up from a Kia. Which back then...were crap. But then again I used to drool over the Rav setups from the Aussies. No mechanical issues but if you got into a fender bender that integrated read tire on the back hatch was bad bad bad.
