Buying First Tacoma. 2014 "like new" or 2016 brand new?

Hey, all. I've been reading the forum for a while, but this is my first actual post. I'm in the market for a DCSB. I found a 2014 with only 5,200 miles on it. Still has a new car smell. Drove it and it felt great. Price tag is $31,800. It wasn't at a Toyota dealership though. I put a small deposit on it, but now I am having second thoughts. I am wondering if I can get a brand new 2016 if I pay a little bit more. Going to local Toyota dealer today to see if we can make some numbers work for a 2016.

I had similar choice when getting mine. I went with a new '15 before the '16s came out. See if you can get a good deal on a 2015.

 

I love the 3rd gen but I would stick with the 2nd gen IMO. It has a proven bulletproof 4.0L engine and decent gas mileage if left alone (stock rims, no armor for example). Transmission is excellent in terms of reliability. I have a 2nd gen and I would never let it go.

 

I have a 2013 and it's the best truck I have ever owned! 4.0 with a 6sMT...it's gonna live forever!

 

I love my '11, but if i had to pick a new truck today, i would go for the 2016.

 

Test drive both first. Usually, 3rd gen test drives make people not want a 3rd gen.

 

x2. I drove a 2016 and didn't care for it.

Drive one and see what you think. But, I'd sure chose the 2nd Gen over the two. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

 

Third Gens are shifty and untrustworthy.

Second gens don't have as much fancy stuff to poke and prod and fiddle with while driving.

I honestly think you can get a better price on the 2014 if you dicker, that's about what I paid [actually a few hundred more] for a new 2015 TRD OR before taxes and such.

 

Like a few other folks have said, see if the dealer still has any 2015's on the lot. You can probably get a new one for the price of that 'like new' 2014. I got mine for $31K. I imagine the 2016 would run you at least an extra $3-5K for the OR package.

 

I would go with the 2014... try to get that price down though

If you can still find a new 2015 you should be able to get a great deal plus it will be brand new.

 

My thoughts exactly. I didn't have a 2016 to compare it to, but I wouldn't trade my 2013 for a new one. Since you put down a small deposit, is it too late to negotiate the price more?

 

I purchased my 2015 late last year (trading in a 4cyl 2013). Last week I looked at a 2016 and test drove it. At my age, the 2015 (with the few mods I've done), will be the last truck I'll ever own.

 

Too much for 2014. I bought my 2015 Sport in July and paid 30,000.

 

Amen. Know what you mean about the last truck ever...you didn't say what you thought about the 2016...

 

Despite all the advice above, I ordered a new 2016 black SR5 V6 DCSB from my local Toyota dealer today. They were able to give me a deal that was just a couple hundred more than the used 2014. I drove both and understand what some of you were saying. But I'm happy to know I will be the only owner. Much better warranty and shopping experience as well. I'm excited. 6-8 weeks for delivery, which will give me time to save for a cap and rack.

Unless the price comes down on the '14, I'd get a '16. I know the mileage is low, but my 2015 was less than that brand new...
