WTF, why don't you guys just downshift? Hehe.... :boink:

Seriously though if that shit acts up I'll pull the fuse as soon as I get to where I am going. Could it really be that much different than ABS on any other vehicle? Guess I'll find out.

I most certainly am haha. I bought the base model, I am cheap. Couldn't fathom replacing "good" tires .

Threw a couple sand bags back there along with my tool box. If I am seriously having problems though the tires will be gone very quickly.

Lighten up there Francis. Didn't you notice the little smiley face at the end of my post? :)

Gotta have a sense of humor. Esp on this thread. Every year it turns into a turd festival. Give it a few weeks and come back and read it.

I have been around the world a few times and have driven in all sorts of road conditions... I do have some inside knowledge of ABS Brake Systems also.

The ABS disable switch is one of the best mods I've done to this truck.

It's good for two things. Getting rid of the ABS in situations where it isn't helping at all like in slick stuff or loose gravel when going slow.

It also fully disables traction control and stability control on the fly when in 4WD. To disable it with the standard button, you have to be stopped and hold it down for 3 seconds.

The location of the button below is more natural and visible to me too.

:)Well I know im going to be REAL careful when pulling up to busy intersections this winter. Maybe even have my foot on the E brake ready to go. Or does the e brake get trumped by the abs as well?

The e-brake or parking brake is all mechanical.

Anyone try doing a rear disc brake conversion? Wondering if doing so would alleviate the abs issues?
Mines still under warranty so I can't, but was curious.

umm no disc brake or otherwise has anything to do with it

    drums are better brakes****
due to the self-increasing brake pressure from the rotating drum
they take less hydraulic pressure to activate

    ****BUT withone major flaw. heat
Under high braking conditions, like descending a steep hill with a heavy load or repeated high-speed slow downs,
drum brakes fade and lose effectiveness. drum brakes can only operate as long as they can absorb the heat.
Once the brake components themselves become saturated with heat, they lose the ability to halt a vehicle

they suck at heat so very bad for 'racing or driving like an ass',
    they suck at maintenance,
    they suck at looks
if you have an axle seal leak, kiss all rear braking goodbye

they are cheap , and you don't need a drum brake behind it for the parking brake
which you do need with discs

but no it is not drum brakes causing anyones supposed abs problem L o F'n L drums stop the rear wheels easily and the computer can modulate them easily

True. Fuck GM being so cheap and not going to the system mentioned above on the Colorado. There must not of been any other reason they didn't go to a parking brake that uses the rear calipers other than they wanted to build the Colorado as cheap as possible. What a piece of crap because of the auxiliary mini-drum and shoes-on-rotor-hat system.

-Paraphrased for everyone who gets all butthurt over the rear brakes on the Tacoma :D

Yes because we all drive trucks with the same tire size, weight etc. so that have not been tried before..

    /sarkasm

    Bigger question is:
Is it worth to swap rear axle on the truck that will probably have frame rust to crap in 6 years ?

Swap in rear axle to discs would resolve this. Everything else had been ruled out, including swapping ABS units from other Toyota trucks that don't have this problem. The only thing left is rear axle with drum brakes.

Drum brakes are the cute girl from your little hometown. They aren't the most attractive but they'll do their job and keep you happy and almost never let you down.

Disc brakes are that one slutty chick from the big city. Sure, they're shiny and pretty, but in the end they are marginally better and aren't worth the hassle nor the risk.

The moral of the story is that @BlueT took the risk and now has herpes from dry humping the disc brakes of the new Colorado. Oh, and switching from one to the other won't solve this ABS issue.

I'm a part of some Monte Carlo owner's club and lots of them do this without a rear axle swap. Includes different proportioning valve if done right as well as bolt on brackets for the vert. It does make a difference in stopping power on those cars.

just was wondering what everyone's thoughts were for the taco.

    Meh
Those discs on Colorado work very well. Over the weekend me and my buddy hear had to do wood run.
We loaded up Colorado with pile at the height of the cabin, mine was getting loaded to the hight of the bed. 4 trips over hills here and I could smell my brakes.
    Pretty impressed by that Chevy.
